More efficient way of quieting exhaust

Currently I have long tubes and a non catted d pipe with borla xr1s on my car.

I’m looking to quiet down my car and was going to buy some borla pro XS and have them welded in. However, today I was looking through some parts and forgot I have a catted h pipe. I prefer the sound of the x Pipe vs the h pipe.

I got to thinking that maybe I should have the cats taken off the h pipe and welded in.

Can anyone recommend which way I should go to quiet the car down the most? Going with one or the other ways.

A while ago, I put a BBK off-road x on the Cobra to go with my SLP LM1s, needless to say I hated it after 48 hours of driving it on the street. So I had the factory cats welded into the off-road x. It does help, and that's a valid option for quieting the system down a bit.

Cats definitely help. So do different mufflers. You want quiet that still sounds real good do the cats on the X or the H and some Magnaflows or the Borla Queit/Steeda mufflers.

Cats also are there to act as resonators; so cats will help. You could also put resonators in.

IMO you're going to see the biggest change in loudness with a change in the muffler. @scottydsntknow suggested Borla/Steeda, and I can say through experience that the Steeda catback (made by Borla) is good middle-ground. I had tried a Magnaflow catback on my '03 Cobra and it was just too loud for me, so I changed to the Steeda catback and the loudness dropped enough for my satisfaction.

I thought Magnaflow (Not the Packs) were quite?

What XR-1's do you have? Round or oval? What size?

The Pro XS is essentially the exact same as the XR-1. Both are a straight through design. It would only be a consideration if you have round XR-1's and go to an oval Pro XS for more area of sound deadening.

The H-pipe with cats would be a good place to start. It will also help with low and mid-range torque, which is where you are the majority of the time when driving.

Me too.

Imo, hands down the best way to quiet it down is getting a resonator or cat in the midpipe.

I can only give you my personal experience with the two. The Magnaflow catback's idle was a bit louder than the Steeda/Borla. Mid range, the Steeda was quieter with a smoother tone. WOT, they were about equal, with the Steeda having a smoother tone. Maybe part of the quieter observation was the Steeda having an overall smoother tone at all RPMs, with no rasp whatsoever.

Thanks for the feedback. I love my Magnaflow most of the time but screams at WOT. Just getting a feel for other options. I just figured it was the cams, headers, compression, etc. I am running a SRA catback which I think has different mufflers (inlet/outlet of opposite sudes).

As per the original post. Same exhaust when I had cats was probably 2/3 the volume and much smoother sounding.

I have the round xr1s. Not sure on the side but they’re pretty short which I know the shorter the muffler the louder it is. I’m going to have cats welded on next week and see how it goes.

Again, cats, a quiet brand of mufflers and roll. Its not rocket science. A lot of the time the loudest cars are some of the slowest anyways. Witness the "full bolt on" 2V with stock 20yr old 4x4 suspension and flowmaster 40s with an offroad pipe as it rolls by...

A prochamber will quiet it up and give you a unique sound. I ran an offroad one with a Borla Stinger type muffler and thought it sounded perfect. Im now running an offroad H-pipe with oval Magnaflows and it is definitely a little quieter and sounds more common.

Stock mufflers with an offroad midpipe is a great combo too. I had an offroad x with the stock catback on an 01 Cobra and it was quiet but had some good tone to it.
