Getting ready to hopefully take the 2020 out soon, been sitting in my garage since I got it in mid November, has 35 miles, and it snowed again today.

What are you guys doing for break in period, how many miles, shift points, etc.

I intend to drive this car like I do my others. Open track events, spirited driving, country roads, road trips, etc.

thanks in advance !

Mine hit 8250 at 101 miles. I broke it in they way I drive it and thru 5400 miles and 3 track days it has no consumption. I did no track days or extended high rpm pulls until 1000 as the manual says. I think it is hard on a car to break it in soft then run it hard.

This is what I did for the first 1,400 miles:
  • Set shift light to 3K RPM.
  • Varied the throttle when driving. Accelerated up to 3K RPM, let the RPM drop down to 2K, increased back up to 3K gradually, repeated.
  • Didn't go past 4th gear.
  • Hit 4K RPM a few times (couldn't resist).
  • Changed oil at 1,456 miles.
I can't remember at while mileage I did my first WOT pull, but after the first oil change, I let the new oil reach operating temp. (192°F) and freed the beast.

When I cold start mine I let it come off of the higher idle (about 140 degrees) before I drive it.

2000-2200RPM shifts while all the fluids circulate and get warmed up - it takes a while to get 10 quarts of oil up to 175 degrees.

When oil is up to operating temperature (175-200) I get a little more aggressive.

I don't know about yours, but it takes my transmission FOREVER to warm up.

You're at 35 miles - first 100 miles is critical - vary throttle and load as stated above. Also bed your brakes correctly that first time out if you don't like to hear them squeal all the time.

I never went over 3K the first 100 miles. Every 100 miles thereafter I would increase my shift point by 500RPM. Eventually I found myself at 1000 miles and all bets were off.

Oil change at 1000 miles to get all the crud out and then enjoy it. I just don't get crazy until all my fluids are in their operating range.

Over 10,000 miles on it right now and my "top off" quart is still in the garage with the cap sealed.

I think the engine oil temperature is a good thing to add. Coming from a couple of Porsches, I have always watched the oil temps and think that this engine should be treated the same way. I drove to work the other morning which is 8 miles for me and it was just over 150 when I parked so it takes some time to warm up for sure.

If you ask 10 different engine builders about break in you'll get 10 different opinions. The trick is finding common themes among them. I've even watched an engine builder say that after about 30 miles, the rings are set and the tolerances in all the rotating components only wear and grow from that point to the death of the motor.

Having said that, there's other parts of the car that in my opinion are just as important or more important for break in. Namely the differential and the transmission. If you swap out a ring/pinion set from Motive or FRPP or Yukon or US Gear, they'll all tell you to take it easy for a period of miles until the gears can break in properly (unless you get the isotropic finish treatment). Some recommend 500 miles.

The same is true for a clutch or certain mating parts of the transmission.

Over the years, the best compilation of advice is this:

1) Don't operate the vehicle at all during break in until it's fully up to operating temperature (this is good to continue for the life of the vehicle but absolutely crucial during break in).

2) Avoid long sustained rpm cruise control (stop and go street driving varying the rpm up and down from idle to 3-4k is preferable).

3) Don't flog it to redline (more for the components I listed above than the motor).

4) Change the oil at the end of the breakout period and drive it like you stole it from that point forward.

I ordered mine in Jan, 2019. I drove it home on 7-5-19. I agree with the first post. I drove slowly for 500 miles and then got conservative for the next 500 miles.

The Voodoo engine is awesome.

I got the Ford package literature about a month later.

for break in you always want a variable rev. for any engine. IE dont stay too long at 2500 rpm or 3000. You want a wide range of RPM. also don't rev it too high. after 400 or 500 miles go wild.

I’ve already got open track events planned, Watkins Glen in June and Gingerman in August.

the Glen would be immediately after fords at Carlisle, and gingerman a few days before the Woodward Dream Cruise.

hopefully all four events take place.
