Are the R888Rs really worth an extra $150 for the set over 555rs or 555g2 on a 460ish whp car? I cry a little inside dropping $1k on just tires. I could buy 17x10.5 reps AND the nittos for the same price as the toyos on my stock wheels.

I'd skip the G2's. They won't hold anything. I ran the 555R's and was happy with them. But if you want to carve corners at all you'll want something with a stiffer sidewall. I noticed a difference going from the G2's to the 555R's. But if you're mostly worried about hooking up stoplight to stoplight the 555R's will be good.

I have 555 extremes now and they do decent in the corners. Are the 555r quite a bit softer? My top choice would be firehawk indy 500s but they don't make 315/35/17. If i don't get the 10.5 rears right now i could go that route

I've had a few DRs in the rear, hook nice but dont like the feel in the corners. Not to mention rain.
Run R888/R88R (same tire different tread) exclusively on all four now. Wont go back, a DR gives marginal improvement from a dig (over R888) if you're running a Hoosier or ET but 888 make the car wake up all around.
Putting down 720HP on a bad day and R888 are terrifying in a good way. Went to make a left at a double turn lane decided I want to put a little space before the next light. Other cars still turning through the intersection... I was at the next light.

I'll never go back to a DR for street driving. If you're not drag racing I say pay the money. Otherwise just buy a slick. Pullied Cobra you'll be able to slip first and hook 2nd.

I have an adjustable rear sway bar so have it pretty dialed in to be neutral so much more confident in turns with the 888. I've run summers up front and DR in the back, cant power out of the understeer. Depends how had you push it but at the limits a balanced car with balance grip is a whole different thing.

My girl has a 600hp STI so I like to keep my car balanced so I dont feel like bitch on the back roads.

Yes its worth it cause it hooks way better. U wanna tire that handles well or hooks well? Pick one. U cant have both. Personally id go with a DR tire.

Ur not being timed on ur laps so who cares how they handle in the corners. DR tires will handle just fine in the corners and not put u in the woods from spinning! A 500 whp car will surely benefit from a DR.

Driving style. DR wont put you into the wood due to spinning but enter a turn a touch hot and try to get the car to rotate with some throttle and you're going straight into the woods. Just overpower the fronts. Again depends how hard you push and what you're comfortable with. To each their own.

We have big clover leaf on ramps around here love carrying speed then hoofing it at the end. Done it with DRs and plowed though it. 888 wiggles and go.b the road race tires just wiggle and go.

Truly 6 of one half dozen. Both are a huge step over summer bullshit tires. Just depends your purpose and how you drive.

I've started cruising with guys that are more into turns than straight line stuff. The DR's keep up ok, but I'm definitely lacking in the turns compared to them. That's one of the reasons I'm going R888R next time around.

The Nitto 555r and g2 are totally different. Ones a drag radial compound and the latter a summer tire. I’ve got the 555r on 20lbs or so of boost and E85 and it does pretty well overall in all situations but I don’t and wouldn’t recommend it in rain. In my size a 305/35r18 the 555r rears and the r888r are practically the same price. I have the Nitto 555 g2 on the front. Handles fine. But I’m not doing auto cross etc. Hard street driving the car it handles great. I run the rear tires at 30psi

I like taking the clover leafs as fast as possible haha. Sad thing is around here a lot of our roads are pretty straight so I have to really find a good twisty road, sign up for auto x one day, or turn at lights like a bat out of hell.

I kind of feel like I’d be disappointed with a DR even though the 555 I had served me well for a few years.

Why would you say that?
A non-R compound is a waste of time.
And we’re talking about front heavy poor handling ‘03-04 Cobras right?
Unless you have thousands in suspension mods and go on a road course, use the 555R.
Hard to complain about $1000 in tires when they are the absolute best upgrade you can make on your car.

Mainly for the handling aspect. I have a decent amount done suspension wise so I don’t want to feel wishy washy. If coronavirus doesn’t end the world I’m wanting to try my hand at autocross hopefully this year just to challenge myself and drive the car a little more spirited than on the average cruise or to/from work on nice days
