Nice part is that for $300K you can get a VERY nice place in Phoenix metro. Location advice already given is solid. I'd also say that while northeast Mesa is OK, stay out of Apache Junction.
It also gets kinda hood in west valley along I-10. Central Mesa is also a little sketch.
Take a look at the map and get a few places you are interested in. Us Phoenix guys can give you the 411 on go-no go areas.
