Or maybe the younger generation has lost faith in the American dream. I know my parents and grandparents would NEVER even think of buying a foreign car...….. I would never buy a foreign car for myself either. I have always bought Ford until I didn't like the look of the Mustang and ended up buying a 2015 Challenger as my DD.

Could it be so simple that the foreign cars is just.... better?
4 door saloon, cheap and simple. What do Ford and GM have to offer in that price range that is nicer than the Camry?

Can never go wrong with a Toyota. They are terrific cars and if you want minimum car troubles, the Toyota is the way to go.
I'll never buy a Toyota because they are so dull and boring. But that's also why they're good, no extra tech that malfunctions etc.

A Ford developed in the US, built in Canada.

A Toyota developed in the US, built in the US.

No doubt Toyota vehicles are more popular overall than American vehicles, but....there is no reason why American vehicle manufacturers can't equal or exceed what they have. It boggles my mind that Toyota (as one example) has a formula for their success, and Ford/GM/Chrysler can't seem to figure it out, or don't want to. I can't help but remember Henry Ford stubbornly resisting any design changes even as his competitors started to make what the public wanted, versus making something HIS way and expecting the public to want it. That stubborness cost him dearly.

I don't know the answer to that. However, the movie Ford vs. Ferrari showed me that when American corporations want to be the best and they invest the proper amount of time and money they can beat anybody.

And there is nothing more American than that.........except maybe kicking @$$ during war time.

Also "which cars are best" are often subjective.
I bought a BMW E60 because my friends E61 had been bullet proof for him.
Mine was the biggest turd I've ever owned. Had it for just over 2 years and when I realized that during my whole ownership I had never driven it for more than 30 days between the times it was on jackstands. The most unreliable piece of shit I've ever owned. Don't know how many vacations and visit to other cities me and my wife cancelled because of car troubles.

But looking at stats, in Sweden we have mandatory vehicle inspection each year and best on the list of number of failures (can be anything from a broken light bulb to rusted frame rails) per car is the japanese and also Korean.
Worst?
Chrysler Grand Voyager. By a landslide.

Here's a graph from 2019 listing number of faults/manufacturer reported to one certain insurance agency.
No faults/100 cars.

Unless the domestics are able to create and sustain a corporate culture even remotely close to that of their Japanese peers, they have zero chance of ever winning. There are countless books and business school case studies detailing out the fundamental differences between the two. One of the most hotly debated examples of this is executive compensation. The Japaneses execs make a fraction of what the domestics make, yet they return far more in terms of results and shareholder value. The labor vs. management mentality is also brought up a lot, and never mind operational and engineering discipline. Not even in the same universe.

They proved that and then they proved how capable they are of self-sabotage as well. If that movie was any indication of how Ford execs truly acted I'm surprised the company is still around. They were cutthroat but their egos were also too large and they were often out of touch and missed the mark a lot!

Is the Toyota Camry on that list???
