Pretty good discussion here. I ended up buying the Kooks Green cats. I didn't want to mess with the stink or with changing them out each year for inspection.

Also note, my Kooks headers have been in for years, and I'm not even convinced that buying a new H pipe now would work if I wanted a second pipe to swap at inspection time ... small fitment changes over the years may or may not mean fitting a new one to the headers would be an issue.

So, I bought the cats to weld into my current H-pipe and be done with it.

The noise was also a consideration for my ice cream truck. If I installed a catless pipe, or welded in catless, I likely would have had to double back and weld resonators or mufflers in anyway.

Guys, the reference was not an ice cream truck.
It was for the guys that only take their car out to take their wife or grandkids for ice cream. Lol.

PS, your headers being in for years will not affect any fitment. They don’t just move..... I mean pacesetters probably do not move around and twist. I think your good there.

I was concerned about whether the company made small changes to the systems over the years that meant a new H-pipe wouldn't line up with my old headers.

Might not be the case, but it's a consideration. I know that these companies make changes when there are issues with clearance reported

When do you get said smell?
I think the only time I have ever smelled anything in my GT500 is a slight tinge at full stop and the wind is blowing towards the front of the car. And it’s only for a second.

Usually when I’m stopped. My sense of smell isn’t the greatest but others have told me that they notice it too

companies have probably not touched the original designed since these cars first came out. They make a design and move to the next car.

Your tune has a lot to do with the CATs living. Most tuners disable the protection, which is why some fail at relatively low hp.
In the same token, they disable this feature because it causes problems when people go to flog the car (ie: race it)
So we get back into the thing of reminding the tuner that you just want a cars and coffee/taking your grandkids for ice cream/show car and not something that actually will get some abuse.
It still boggles my mind that people go out of their way to spend $20-30K+ to mod a car for big HP and don't actually drive the car hard. You know how many guys I have seen at car shows with BIG blowers and Nitrous and such that you know damn well they have never been in boost other than the single dyno sheet they have framed? Look at their rear tires. That is a good indication. lol

Guilty of that myself these days. I use to drag race my Procharged 02 GT and my KB 04 Cobra but all I do these days is work and spent what little time I have with my wife as I work 2nd shift. Maybe I should start now since I just got furloughed yesterday due to this damndemic. Think the track is open? lol

I think most are closed, but I see people posting private events. So who knows.

It really does not cause problems, but may make less power and will be less consistent. I guess those could be considered problems, but so is melting your Cats. I melted mine years ago(not that modified at the time), and have run them gutted since.

Like ALOT less power. I have read of pretty severe drivability issues when in car protect mode.

PM-Perf - my point still stands from a page back . . . what the **** do you care how I spend my money. I'll dump $100k into it and use it for a COVID-19 quarantine shelter, if I choose. You are obviously upset when others don't meet your expectations, since you have mentioned several times your concern over whether cars are used properly once built.

Back on point . . . I called Kooks and talked to them. Obviously, you don't take it as gospel, since they have an agenda to sell parts. But, the Green Cat is designed to handle 850 to the wheels. Theoretically, that's EACH BANK. Obviously, they are not trying to market to those among you with 1700RWHP, which is why you don't see "per bank" in their advertising.

He did mention the need to tune it properly to avoid abusing the cats. For me, that translates to tuning it "correctly." I'm sure PM Perf interprets that to mean the car has to be detuned down to about 140HP. Tomato, tomaaaatoo.

don’t be a dick.
You have been told by literally everyone on here that makes power including one of the higher known tuners for GT500’s the same thing I have said.
Don’t try to distract people with the credibility of by post because I made a joke.
My point still stands, you will probably be fine if you aren’t flogging the car. You obviously do not mind taking the chance, so why do you keep trying to point out my posts to argue?
Stay safe and hopefully we don’t see a post about your engine blown or car burning down.

My two cents to add respectfully and not step on anyone's toes, but my tuner kept my cat protection and my drivability is stellar AND puts down some serious power, over 700 HP and TQ . This is the same tuner I have used since the mid 90's, a guy who tunes day in and day out since then, and a man I respect in the Mustang community .

I drive my 08 hard and mild and anywhere in between. My Stainless Works cats still appear new after a recent inspection , this is after 5 seasons and 28,000 miles.

I might add , that we are here to assist each other and help others make wise and helpful choices. That is my wish when I come here.
