I'm looking to upgrade my wife's daily driver to an Expedition. Budget wise I'm looking to be in the $15,000 to $20,000 range. Mileage wise I'd like to be around 100,000 or less. Pretty much only interested in Limited models unless I find a crazy deal. We would prefer the standard wheelbase model but would consider the EL for the right price. I'm seeing everything we want for the price we need but I'm looking for advice on if we should be looking for a 2014 or older or a 2015 or newer.

2015 was a refresh and the change from the 5.4L V8 to the TT 3.5L V6. The engine is my main concern. I know there were issues with the plugs on some V8s. I don't know if that was resolved at some year point or not. We would probably not buy older than 2012 or so. I don't know anything about the V6. Is there anything to worry about on them? Gas mileage isn't a big concern. We do have a boat we'll tow that with trailer, fuel, etc is under 3,500 lbs. We are probably looking at a 2015 or 2016 if we go the V6 route to stay within budget. I'd prefer 2015+ for the slightly updated look and increased interior tech but reliability is my main concern. Any suggestions or things to look for on these vehicles? We are not really interested in any other makes/models at this time.

3.5TT all the way. I had both for loaners and the 3.5 has a ton more power and a lot better fuel mileage.

The 3.5 will wipe the floor with the 5.4.

There were some timing chain issues with the 3.5s but if I remember right that was the earlier engines. In 15 I would imagine they would be relatively solid.

Ford also says those turbos are only good for 150K miles, but from what I have read it's $1000 for a set of turbos and guys say you can swap them in a day.

That doesn't sound bad for turbo replacement if necessary. Honestly if I can find one at about 100,000 miles it will take my wife a long time to put another 50,000 miles on. She doesn't put many miles on her car.

How much would it be for bigger turbos?

Get the EcoBoost, but if you got a smoking deal I wouldn't skip the 5.4. The spark plug issue was solved in 2009 with a head redesign. They still have cam phaser issues, but that can be solved by running 40wt oil and raising the idle RPM to ~800.

With a tune alone the thing picks up more than 60whp peak with a stupid amount of power under the curve. Start adding in downpipes and a larger front mount and it gets silly.

Want even more and you can get the Raptor 3.5 EB HO turbos and fit them to just about any RWD based 3.5 Ecoboost. With a retune they are good for 100+hp more than the original 3.5 EB.

2013-2016 F-150 3.5L TWIN TURBO UPGRADE KIT

With the Ford Performance turbo upgrade, large front mount, high flow downpipes and a E30 tune it would easily be a 550+whp Expedition.

Pretty solid vehicles. I have a 2017. Just a tune alone mine went 13.8 in 1/4. Only on 18psi as well, most Ecoboost guys run 20-21. I really do wonder how deep into the 12's one could go.

Who's tune are you running? E30 tunes seem to really wake these 3.5's up and with a set of downpipes, I'd bet you'd be knocking on low-13's with ease. I did see a guy with an '18 Navigator add an XDI HPFP pump with a full E85 tune only and went 12.85 @ 104mph. Last I saw, he added an intercooler and boost pipes, but no runs yet.

Just a Brew City Boost tune on 93. They told me I could do a 50%E. I just don't want to push my daily. However, I am curious. I figured with down pipes, CAI, Intercooler and converter 11's would be doable.

Honestly, that Navigator sounds nasty.

the EB is a good motor but do NOT get 2013 or older, they have motor chain issues. 2015 and 16 they basically fixed all the issues. Also the plugs get ****ed after 15k miles. you MUST run dual catch cans to catch all of the shit running inside the PCV system. I would dump my cans every 2 weeks, tons of crap would comes out like a milky juice. so yeah the newer EBs are good but the old motors blow up quite often.

And i thought 5w-30 was good for the 3v 5.4.

So you recommend 5w-40 for the 3v 5.4?
