Family has me tied up from the Mustang Hobby but recently had a custom F5 Mandolin built from an extremely reputable Builder. Money always went to Mustangs but it was a rare opportunity to own a Mandolin as the builder retired.

Excited to start taking lessons and was curious if anyone played Mandolin.

Cheers!

So you've never played one before? What made you choose a Mandolin? Outside of the builder retiring.

Looks like the man knows his business. most people think of it as craftmanship but there is an incredible amount of science in a stringed insturment. Without the science it won't develop the proper tones, it will look like it should but it won't sound like it should.

One thing about the mandolin is they are easy to carry around.

Nope, but I thought of Jethro Tull when you mentioned it.

Yeah, he is truly top notch and uses construction methods similar to those used by Gibson in the 30’s. Was truly blown away by his knowledge and talent.

I believe each pair of strings are tuned alike and the four pairs use the same tune as a violin.

I played guitar when I was younger, but never tried a mandolin. Do the dual strings take getting used to? Never knew they had dual strings until I viewed the video in the link.

Screwed around with the guitar for many years. Novice at best but yes. Totally weird hitting two strings vs 1.

I don't know for sure how a 12 string guitar is tuned, tuned in pairs I suppose, but playing is not to weird It isn't harder to hold down two strings instead of one. I played at and took guitar and banjo lessons for a few years but I could never overcome lack of musical talent and extreme hearing damage. Plus I can't sing or stay in time.
