Car has developed this issue over the last month or so. Every time I go to fill up the tank the gas pump would just shut off after a second or two and it's just getting frustrating. I've searched and some people state its the carbon canister or the check valve in the filler neck(?). Has anyone else dealt with this issue?

I’d lean more towards the the valve sticking. It’s meant to vent as the fuel displaces the air in the tank as you fill. I’ve heard of it before, but typically seems to be more of an issue with E85 in my experience.

Probably the easiest place to start is with the evap cannister. Disconnect the vent line and see if it's plugged. Then remove the cannister and see if it's full of gas or water.

In my work truck I have to actually turn the gas handle upside down and fill it that way otherwise it will do exactly as you described

Check for a kink in the filler tube. Ford had a recall on another model due to kinking. A couple of hose clamps around the kink might keep it open.

I thought the pump would stop because of the vapor coming right back out of the filler neck

Thanks for the starting points, I'll take a look at each one and hopefully it's one of these issues.

Has the tank ever been pulled.

It's been pulled a few times for upgrades.

Was this with a new gas station you haven't used before? I ask, because when I take my wife's (new) 2019 Hyundai Kona to Costco for gas the nozzle shuts off every 3-4 seconds. Same issue at the 3-4 pumps I've used there. Aggravating for me and for those waiting patiently for me to finish adding fuel. But, I have zero issues at any other gas station.

???

Try turning the gas handle upside down and fill it like that

Tried it to no avail.

Nope, same gas station I've always used

I'd say the valve at the end of the filler tube in the tank. It's easy to damage when removing the tank for any reason.

It happened to me. Same issue. Went to a junk yard and pulled a filler tube, removed my old one and saw were it was cracked. Installed the used tube and issue was gone.

Yes removing the tube from the grommet can be tricky. The factory service manual says to cut it out and install a new one or damage to the fill tube can result. But I don't think most folks do it.

ive heard of cars that sit a lot getting a spider web or similar in one of the evap lines to the fill neck.

the charcoal can is easy enough to pull out and test - you should be able to blow through the valve with no resistance and pretty easy through the charcoal can
