it's my understanding they were ascending when advised they were too low. I will wait for the NTSB to look at flight data recorder, cockpit recorder information, i.e. the whole picture of what unfolded. This investigation has only begun.
That aircraft might not have a data recorder as it was manufactured before they were mandated. If that's the case eye witness accounts are about all they're going to get for evidence and let's be honest, with something this high profile you're not going to get much truth. Flightradar24 shows that they were descending as they flew through the mountains and ascended just prior to impact. They turned directly into the mountains.
N72EX - Sikorsky S-76B [760379] - Flightradar24

It looks like they were in a holding pattern for 15 minutes over Pasadena so if I had to lay money on it I'd bet that they were in a hurry and the pilot made some poor choices as they navigated the mountains trying to follow the 101.

This one was reported to have a flight data recorder, but could also be the media jumping to conclusions, reporting without all the facts.

I like flying in helicopters. Although I’ve only flown with military and LE that I knew were flying daily for the last decade.

Had a few coworkers all survive an engine failure. Successfully auto rotated and walked away.

Mil did an auto rotate with me onboard, but fired it back up before the ground. That was ****ing scary!

That was a dual engine aircraft which should be able to fly under one engine. The likelihood of both going out is pretty slim. I never flew helicopters so take that with a grain of salt

correct was a dual engine helicopter and a failure of both would be extremely rare, unlikely, but that's not the only thing that can bring a helicopter down. I have ridden several, never been scared, but the frailty of these birds has always been in the back of my mind. The smallest of **** ups and can end your life.

Transmission failure can happen, seize the blades. Blade may have struck a bird. Lots of possibilities.

Kind of like how ABC initially reported all of his daughters were onboard and then retracted it

or like they were earlier reporting Rick Fox as being on board. Plus some news networks seem to be treating the recorded radio traffic between the S-76 and the ATC as a black box voice recording...lol

Reports from a sound engineer on site who heard a low helicopter just a moment before, said there was an instant stop to the rotors. It wasn't like they crashed and the blades were still spinning and breaking off.

Thanx Bob I appreciate that. He was just a good human being and tough as nails! Really pains me to even think about it smh.

20 minutes from where I grew up. 30 minutes from where I live. I didn't hear anything about this officer's death on local media. Hmmm. Reading the CT Post article, he was quite a man, having earned multiple medals/merits. Sad to lose such a great officer with such dedication and heart.

Watching a person dribble and shoot a ball gives you a connection with said person? I understand what you are saying and while I completely disagree I'll respect your "attachment" to the fellow if that is how you feel. I believe perspective is key though.

People die every day and unless it is a celeb 99.9999999% go unnoticed. When I opened the Sunday paper there was a two or three inch obit for a 99 year old veteran who, by all accounts, had a great life and was a great person. Society fixates on celebrity and believes an attachment exists because you see them on the big or small screen. Is there really an attachment though?

When such a world wide super star athlete or celebrity dies so soon in such a way, especially someone who’s career was always in the spot light people use that death and reflect on their own lives and people close to them and the fragility of life.

It really just urks me that his death is being more in the news than the other 8 people including his child that died too. 9 people died that day and they are only talking about the one b-ball player and that makes no sense to me

I understand why people are saying what they do. Me and all mine poured out for Nicky Hayden (RIP) when he had his wreck and had the plug pulled. I just wished that more was showed towards the others involved.

it’s horrible for all and I feel for all their families, just hate these spectacles around celebrity deaths

From my understanding, these birds dont crash, and if they do then it is the one you want to be in because they are so safe and will survive if you have a failure as they will just auto-rotate you to the ground. I spent nearly my whole military career working out of helicopters and I never thought I would hear one be described as "safe" ever.
