Does anybody know if there's any difference in black barrel and blue barrel methanol? I've used VP M1 but it's getting harder to find locally. My local propane fuel company is willing to pump their black barrel methanol out of their 55gal drum for me. Labels appear to be the same but I want to make sure it's acceptable quality for water/meth injection applications. Thanks

Black barrel is industrial grade. Same base material but will contain some contaminants. The blue barrel is labeled for racing purposes and will be a higher purity. I would be careful with using the black barrel material in your car.

I was told the black barrel is still 99.9% pure, and that there's no difference between that and "racing grade" but obviously there's some different opinions on the matter, so I'm trying to get a definite answer

I'd personally try to find another way to get the VP stuff since you already know the company and quality if it's something that's going to bother you.

I've been trying. Closest place I can get VP is 90 minutes away but they're out of stock till April

I could be wrong but I thought any VP dealer was able to order 55gal drums to resell to consumers. Might be your only option. M1 isn't as common as the other fuels VP sells which is another issue.

The only way to be sure is to take a look at the certificate of analysis for the two drums. There are different levels of purity. At a minimum if you choose to go with the material from the black drum filter it through some high quality paint filters to make sure you don’t get any debris from the drum wall into your tank. The black drums are typically reused and not always well cleaned prior to fill. The blue fuel drums are typically single use and disposed of or repainted black and used for other chemicals. I used to deal with this stuff on a daily basis and there are different versions of 99.9% pure when it comes to bulk chemicals.

Good luck with whatever route you choose.

Thank you very much. This is exactly the answer I needed, from somebody that knows what they're talking about. Thank you

@codycat91 If you just need small amounts for meth injection you can get 1 gallon jugs of "methyl hydrate" at any hardware store in the household paint section. It's usually sitting with the other paint thinners. Read the label carefully but it should be 99.9% pure methanol.
