Ford has been pursuing the road course aesthetic with the GT500 since 2007. Why did the GT500 only come with a manual and road course ready performance package in 2011-up.

The GT500 is a high power, mod ready, supercharged, somewhat front heavy, 4000+ lb car. It does well on the road course for what it is, but it’s a drag racer at its core.

I honestly wish Ford would wake up to this truth.

I’d like to see:
Track pack = DCT, wing, etc.
Drag pack = strengthened 10R80 with the “box” option like the Demon

An SRA car in many’s opinions is not road race centric.
So saying that has been their focus since 2007 seems silly to me.

I know plenty of guys who do. My brother had no problem purchasing the car, but he did have a problem with getting ripped off at the dealership for simple maintenance.

I could buy a 2020 GT500, but would still do my own maintenance for a couple of reasons. I don’t like throwing money away on simple things I can do myself, I don’t always trust others doing the work, and I actually enjoy most of it.
+1 on all of that for me too.

I do my own work as well, and for the Nissan DCT, I had read that the cost of the required oil for the trans is over $80/qt, and 10 are required for a fluid change, like every 15K miles. That is where that figure came from. Not saying the Ford or even the new C8 will be the same with their DCT trannys, I would just like to wait and see. Same with the longevity/durability. I think they are great transmissions, I'd just give it time to see how they hold up.

IMO the DTC trans in the GT500 is one of the main reasons I want to buy one. Why would you buy this $$ car if you only wanted to drag race it? Just get a base model GT and put a turbo on it, cheaper lighter and faster in the end. I am curious to see how the dual clutch holds up to modded GT500's as they start to make there way to the track with a 664lb-ft Tq rating which is close to what the GT500 is rated at stock.

The trans uses Pentosin FFL-4 fluid which is readily available and about $25 a qt. Not sure what the maintenance interval is or why you would have to change it every 15k if its not exposed to combustion by products? They do use the fluid to cool the clutch packs so maybe heat is breaking it down? I attached the spec sheet from Tremec.

As far as swapping, I think that would be a nightmare. Most of the magic in the trans seems to come from the programming. Being able to shift mid-turn on a road course without unsettling the chassis due to the computer adjusting shift timing based of suspension sensors does not sound like something easily replicated by hot rodders. In fact is doesn't sound like something Ford would ever even offer and most certainly DOES sounds like tech you would see from high end European manufacturers!!!

I can't wait till the crazy dealer mark ups go away!

It seems silly to me that you seem unaware of the SRAs successes in class road racing with the S197 chassis.

2011/12 Boss 302, road course focused SRA S197 chassis.

If Ford targeted the 07-14 GT500 at drag racers, why was there no auto option? Why did they offer the SVT Performance Package which was handling focused?
Because for reasons unknown to Ford they don’t offer a straight line focused package for their most powerful Mustangs. Meanwhile, the CTS-Vs with their auto options become more and more popular in the drag racing scene despite the fact the LSA doesn’t make crap for power without nitrous.

I'd love to know the numbers comparison for people who drag race compared road course their cars. Ford seems so determined to be considered a road course vehicle now. In my area I don't think I've ever ran into anyone who was dedicated, or even tried for that matter, to take their car to a road course. Everyone gauges their vehicles' performance on drag strips. Granted I know there is a large road course community but it's few and far between out here. The demographics don't seem to be on par on what Ford is trying to develop.

lol. Believe it or not there's a road course not to far from Atco. And I live 5 minutes from what used to be Englishtown and they have a road course now that I don't think anyone ever goes to.

Oh I've seen plenty of videos of guys doing it, and I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to beat the nuts off of someone else's car, it's just not something I'm particularly interested in doing with my own. The wear and tare is exponential compared to drag racing.

Oh, I believe you.

But look at this logic... What car does Porsche, Ferrari, Maserati, Jaguar, etc etc etc make that is for drag racing?

Well obviously, but you're comparing apples to oranges. Those are European sports cars with nothing but a road course in mind. How many people think about Ford and go, hmmm I can't wait to see what that bitch will do at Watkins Glenn(Ford GT excluded)? When you think of a mustang it's, ok what's this thing going to run in the 1/4

Which is what it's always been..minus the Boss 302s, 429s, etc...

Now the new GT500 is shooting at BOTH, the road course and the 1/4 mile.

I've sold all mine but one for $1000 over invoice.

I think for the vast majority of people going to the road course, a GT350 is the ticket.

which one would you be more inclined to market to a consumer first if you had both on the show room floor. I'm curious to hear a dealers perspective on both these cars.

Me, personally? Road course all the way. We take our customers with us to the track in the summer for track days.

my bad I meant between a gt350 and a 2020 gt500

Whichever the customer wants? lol I don't care which they buy.

I haven't seen a customer come in comparing the two yet...nor did I see a customer come in comparing a 13 GT500 and 13 Boss 302.
