If your car is lightly modded, yes! Return to stock fully before a smog.

If your car is heavily modded, well, hope you have some friends that run smog shops lol.

I had smogged the car multiple times for star testing with the all the mods including the tune and it passed every single time. I figured when I got flagged to go to the ref I would take it with the tune since it had passed before but that was not the case. But lesson learned go back to the stock tune when getting smogged.

Wow interesting. So any return style fuel systems in California will have to revert back to a returnless. Don't think a stock tune will work with a return system

The land of commies and socialists!
an xcal scrambles the first byte of the scp cal code which the handheld uses as its "married* identifier.

The first thing the emissions tester does when plugged in is reads the cal code in order to reference the vehicle specs and emissions level from its database.

an xcal scrambles that very first byte and it will immediately set a referee required as soon as its plugged in.

He could have returned it to stock with the xcal and it wouldnt have set a referee.

can still do it technically but epa requires ford documented reflash as a stipulation

I flash tunes all the time and even ford cannot tell they are altered. I have yet to tune a vehicle that didnt pass california emissions.

Thank you for educating us. That's very interesting.

So I was reading over on this site that the guy just said screw it and paid the big fine. Didn't realize this was an option...

First time state ref ticket. (27156 b vc) - LS1TECH - Camaro and Firebird Forum Discussion

That thread is from last year so it may still be an option for us. I wouldn't be surprised if we can no longer do this though. I wouldn't put it past this state to either remove that option or make it so expensive that you cant feasibly pay it.

You can’t do that anymore. I have a buddy that got state ref and it’s not an option. nowadays it requires the sign off from the ref before you head to court. It’s a complete money shit fight now.

Surprising because it's always just a money grab in CA at the end of the day. They dont care about pollution, the weather, or being "green".

They just want money.

Are we 100% certain you cant just pay the fine and move along?

Yeah the guy said he paid it online but I agree as that's probably not an option anymore. I'm curious tho

In my buddy’s case it was state ref inspection mandatory with no option to pay a fine and move on. In regards to smog check state referee, I don’t see how one could pay a fine since their is no fine to speak off.

I agree the whole thing is a money grab plain and simple.

A bit of an update. I went to the referee today and it failed. Went with the tune and pulley still on. They said the monitors were all on but their new software tells them if it's not a factory tune as soon as its plugged in. They said it gives them a question mark on the computer and that's how they know it's not stock. I had the stock cover on the supercharger and covered the front of it so you couldnt see through it but they peeked through the back of it and said it needed to have the stock pulley. As far why it was flagged it was either the smog tech who flagged it or either shops have updated software that tells them it has a tune. So I have to put the stock pulley back on and get it reflashed by Ford and I have to show them proof to even make an appointment by taking pictures of everything done. So putting the stock tune back on with the SCT isn't gonna cut it. They even pointed out the boost gauge but they noticed it didnt work. I had disconnected it and put the vaccum boost lines back to stock before going in. Hopefully this doesnt happen to anyone else because they literally want EVERYTHING stock!

Thanks for the update. Keep us posted.

Yeah sorry to highjack this thread, kinda all pertains to the same thing. I understand the biannual smog check. I'm in the process of adding resonators to my catless exhaust. I hear it makes it sound VERY quiet. With no smog in my county the only way I'm getting screwed is if I get nailed by a chp and sent to a ref. Would be devastating and a nightmare.

Wow. The mullets, KISS makeup, and flava-flav bling are impressive in that forum.

Unfortunately that post is a couple years old, and the state seems to have tightened the thumbscrews since then. Paying a fine wasn’t an option for me, and even if it was this time my bet is it won’t be next time.
