So, my wife and I are looking to move closer to her family. Her sister lives in Denver, and her others sisters and parents live in New Mexico. After doing some research, I feel Colorado Springs will be a good compromise in distance.

With that being said, I am applying for jobs now with some hope on a couple of leads. Once I land a good job and move out there, we will sell the house and my wife will follow me out.

For you guys that live there or in the area, how do you like it? What are the Pro's and Con's of Colorado Springs? What do you not like about it? How is life for a conservative white boy. Thanks!

I live here. It’s a buyers market for homes. Houses are under contract in hours to 3 days. Prices are higher than the norm.
Traffic is terrible(overpopulated)
Hail storms are a nightmare like I’ve never seen before.

Place is beautiful. Skiing, bike trails, walk trails, 420(if you’re into that), and overall great weather.

Since I'm pretty new here, I'll give my pros and cons from an outsider.

Pros
mountain biking/ hiking trails every where
people are friendly and for the most part normal and in good physical shape
traffic isn't too bad yet, but they predict this place will grow to the size of Denver in 10 years
close to skiing
breweries everywhere
tons of cool mountain towns to visit
drag strip close by, either Pueblo or Denver
jobs are plentiful
making friends seems to be real easy
not too many liberals
close enough to Denver to catch sports and concerts

Cons
housing prices have been climbing
auto tags and insurance are expensive
restaurants in Colorado Springs suck, you have to go to Denver for something good
it's very much a military town, if your a business owner, giving back is expected
lots of bums with mental issues, which i believe to be a problem from legalized super refined weed
people get upset when you talk about the bum problem

We lived in Colorado for 10 years. My wife is a native. Although I lived north of COS, I was constantly down that way as I worked PT as a fly fishing guide for my uncles outfitter. What’s been mentioned above is spot-on. I’ll add a few other things I find important that haven’t been listed.

- Very religious part of Colorado as well. I’ve found almost equally as compared to military. I’ll let you decide if this is a pro or a con.

- I know this was mentioned but thought I’d provide my 2 cents. Real estate and rental properties have sky rocketed in price over the last 12-15 years. Where majority of the rest of the USA saw the economic downturn of 2007, majority of Colorado didn’t. Plus, with the shear amount of people moving to Colorado, the new home builders cannot keep up. This is especially the case in Denver where offering $20-30k above asking price is the norm. In the 10 years we lived there, we bought and sold 3 houses, each was in an “up and coming neighborhood”, made a ton of money on each with minimal investment.

- Next to Montana/Idaho, the outdoors doesn’t compare. It’s the single biggest thing I miss from living there.

- I’ll also say that traffic, everywhere, is a nightmare. Absolute nightmare. Year around. And if you get a large snow storm, stay home as you’ll be absolutely shocked as to how many implants from other states are a danger to everyone on the road.

- I feel as though the 2A has gone down hill over the last 5-6 years. Initially, there was a small spike in our favor and now it’s definitely moving in the other direction. Colorado fell to number 40 out of 50 states in NRA’s best states for gun owners. Red Flag System was just initiates as well as a 15 round magazine limit.

I’ve lived in Arizona, Colorado and Michigan. Of those states, on a pure lifestyle decision, Colorado gets the W. That said, if I was to move right now it would be to Wyoming, Montana or Idaho.

PM with any questions you may have.

If you want land, go north and east. It is 30 minutes to just about everything due to the sprawling layout of the town. Pretty easy access to mountains, hiking, skiing, and horseback riding. Denver is quite a bit more liberal than COS, but there are some liberal hippy areas here too - however I feel that it more conservative in general. People tend to drive a bit closer than I’d prefer, and to my knowledge, I’m the only guy that uses snow tires. Keep your car comprehensive deductible low, because windshield damage is common. Lots of random trivia here, but We really enjoy the area. Do your research if you’re looking to buy, prices and weather vary greatly.

North side is where you probably want to be, and as stated, east is where the available land is. Traffic has gotten pretty bad in the past couple of years but it's not like Denver traffic though. Proximity to the mountains is a huge plus. With a strong military and govt contracting presence, its a conservative stronghold in the state. All in all, a pretty good city to live in.
p.s. hope you're not a Raiders fan

....The hail seems to be more limited to South Colorado Springs. I work on base and the computer networks have automated alerts for weather, to include damaging hail. It would be a huge benefit to have covered parking, but on the bright side, you can get a beater as your daily..

I'm actually moving there in about a week. Already have a house and moved my car up there. I'll be living about 20 minutes from the springs. As others have said, the mountains are amazing, it's very dry and gets pretty cold. Hail storms pop up out of nowhere and houses go crazy fast. I'll be living in Peyton and might be worth your time to look for property there.

Overall I really like it here. I didn't realize the place was going to explode with growth when I moved here. My game plan is to build a house in one of the up and coming mountain towns, and if the Springs gets to busy from the growth, I'm going to move out.

Yeah I'll be living in Peyton proper. Meridian Ranch is the subdivision. Not far from Falcon obviously.

Yeah, it would be cool to get everyone together sometime. There's a guy in the same subdivision as me who has a black 03/04 cobra. I've driven by and seen it in his garage, not sure if he's on here or not.

Sweet. I'm in the next subdivision over, in the inner ring of the golf course. Hit me up when you get settled in

For sure man. Not sure how long you've lived here but you'll have to fill me in on any meets or car shows etc. I love doing cars and coffee and just cruising around.

I lived out there awhile back. I moved from South Carolina to there so bit of a culture shock.
Pros:
Tons of Soccer
Tons of outdoor stuff to do
Mountains are great
really nice people

cons:
traffic\crowded
cost of living compared to the dirty south
They treated me like I was mentally handicap because of my Southern Accent.
No ocean and not many lakes

In the end you adapt to new things.

Love visiting the area. The Garden of the Gods was well worth the visit.
