So, I may be doing a writeup on a navi swap into an 03 f150. Dads farm truck swallowed the stock 2v 5.4 at 203k. He and I have decided we needed to have some fun and do some modding. We built a custom 4.0 swapped 85 B2 5 years ago, so we're not newbs. Tag along for a bumpy ride.

Still waiting for room in the shop. My brother has a 99 with a dead hole, so he's fixing that. Been looking at the diagrams between the two. Everything on the Navi harness for the most part looks to interchange with the f150 harness...

Spent some time today at dads shop! Getting little brothers 2v prepped for install on his 99. Should be drop and go at this point.

Decided to put the 4v on a stand and go at it. Found some things that concern me, but I dont think its catastrophic.

1. Thrown cam follower in the passenger head. (Removed lash adjuster and tested it, checked out good.)

2. Someone put SOHC primary guides/tensioners in it. I bet this thing rattled like a SOB! Currently deciding how to correct it, as it's a low budget farm truck build.

3. For those that are wondering, with some determination, and a dremel, you can put a 2v coil in a 4v head. (good thing I've got spare 4v coils laying around.)

My father was all sorts of wide eyed when I started pulling the valve covers and timing cover. His exact quote, "how in the f--k did you time the engine in your car with all of that chain?" I just smiled and laughed!

So, survey on the timing set says we're replacing it with a new primary set from ford. However, I wont order parts until after I scope the bores and verify all is well.

Took the valve covers and timing cover into work today. Figured I'd clean em up and use em one way or another! No pictures of the timing cover, as it'll stay bare aluminum. View attachment 1595316

To the best of my knowledge the only real problem will be steering shaft, look forward to your progress

Why would the steering shaft be a problem? The navigator was based off the f150 chassis?

As for progress, nothing has happened to speak of. truck got moved back in line. Trying to get the 06 super duty I got for 500 bucks going for the farm truck.

With wedding planning, family emergencies, and my grandmother passing, not much has been accomplished.

I'll be taking over the 03 and building it the way I want, did find the navi engine that was purchased ended up having a PI short block, so that ain't gonna cut it with 8.8:1 C/R. I'll be building a stock bottom end for this thing to prep it for install. Going to completely pull this mystery apart fully and pretty much steal the heads, timing cover, intake, and any other 4v related parts and transferring over to the other short block I'm going to assemble. Only real changes to the new short block would be a 3v pump.

Heads will probably end up with 99 continental cams to get a little more duration to hopefully overcome the anemic manifold. Going to build a custom head cooling mod as to not destroy the heads when towing.

Steering shaft will run into heads/exhaust manifolds, 2v is narrower than 4v, truck was not built for 4v and you will notice steering on navigator is rack and Pinion not steering box

Tearing the 5.4 down finally to assess the damages. Found bearings in ROUGH condition, bores about done in, and the #8 exhaust valve guides had been leaking.

Block is. 010 over, crank is .010 under. Being the block isnt the later style NVH block, and being .010 over with cylinder wear, its junk. I've got another block lined up, and ready to go. Crank is probably ok to use with a good polish, so it'll be getting put in storage with my other cranks. I've got a std journal steel crank from an 06 f250 ready to drop in the block I'm picking up if needed.

Block I'm picking up is out of an 03 navi, and has a crank in it. Itll probably get pulled down, tanked, and finish honed before assembly. Going back with std bore flat tops to keep stock compression. Keeping stock rods, as this isnt an all out power build.

Heads will be cleaned up and inspected before determining plan of attack. I'll probably have exhaust guides put in the driver head and go. It's a budget build, not going to stress too much here. I do have a lead on a set of 99 continental intake cams though. ;-)

Sorry for the long drawn out timeframe on this. Between getting married, harvest, and other shop projects, it's been a deal! Hoping it will go faster from this point forward!

Picked up the short block I had lined up, got it home and started prepping it for assembly. Found there was a some water in a cylinder at one point and pitted the cylinder pretty good. Luckily for me I pulled a 3v 5.4 out of a truck that had failed phasers not long before. Tore it down and looked it over. After some deliberation I decided to put together the 3v block. Cleaned up what I could and checked clearances, it should be a runner. Dont have any pictures of the short block, but will have some of the assembled long block. Waiting on the machine shop at this point.

Took my spare 3v pump housing and installed some mystery gears in it. They're allegedly TSS billet gears, but no markings to prove it. I'm not going to be making enough power to worry about it, but I do need an oil pump. The standard volume 2v pump that was on the 4v initially wasnt going to suffice. In the trash it went for a proper replacement.

Good call and the stock 3v oil pump is garbage too.
