I would also love some old farm land.

Of course I'd want to level everything, put up a cheap single wide, repurpose a barn as garage/work shop, then pave a 1/4 straight-away

not at my post...
My friends family sold their 10,000 acre ranch recently, was in their family for generations....My paternal grandfather sold his about 22-23 years ago. There isn't any money in it for most family farms/ranches....My wifes family still has about 400 acres with enough cattle for an ag exemption, but that's it, definitely no money being made there.

I didn't know there was this much experience from farming and ranching on this site.

So, another sticking point is there is a shortage of farmers and ranchers already, and its going to get worse over the next couple of decades. Is it a case of only big name agricultural groups can make it, and small farmers and ranchers can't?

Monsanto and other big corporate operations in farming, ranching have killed the American farm...Control the food (farming/ranching), control the information (left wing MSM)...then you control the people.

That has been the trend since the 1960's.

A better use of your money would be to go to r/wallstreetbets and take the first post advice on investing your life savings.

Never expected to see that name here lol.

I have some friends that run a ranch out in OK, it's physically massive but in terms of cattle, not a monster operation. They work from sun up to sun down every single day of the year. If Christmas rolls around only one of them can leave to go spend time with family in another state because someone has to stay back. It's not a glamorous lifestyle. If work is light, they are usually at a neighbors helping them out because when branding/castrating starts they need all the help they can get.

Another buddy of mine does it right, he has like 5 acres and dedicated an acre to selling small crops that he sells at the farmers market. It's still a labor of love but he does supplement his income with it.

Around here you will want about 10 million cash to start a farm big enough to support a family. Farm land is 10000 an acre for grain land.

I'm already on there. Guy I met only wants another farmer. Thus, the creation of this thread.
I greatly admire youre dedication. It takes a gentle soul to get a burley Farmer to open up his softer side. You are a treasure to rural America.
