On Sunday I filled the tank with 93, added stabil gas and drove it a few miles back to my mom's garage. All was going as planned...

I pulled the car in the garage, turned it off and started placing the flat stoppers at all four tires and then asked my mom to come help observe me driving onto the ramps. I got into the car and turned it on. Then I decided to double check the ramps one more time so I got out.

I must have inadvertently pushed down on the door lock when I shut the driver side door. I realized with horror the door was locked when I tried to get back in and checked the passenger side which was locked as well. My spare key was at my home 45 minutes away! I freaked out realizing the car could be idling for more than 1 hour potentially.

We called roadside assistance and the automated system told us a driver would be there in 1.5 hours. The radiator fan is working and was replaced about 3 years ago and I could hear it coming on. I checked the temperatures on the gauge through the driver side window and it was ok. So as a backup I got in the car and started driving home to get the spare key just in case. I decided to call roadside one more time and this time bypassed the automated system and got a human on the line. I told him the situation and he called one of the drivers and told me he would be there in 20 minutes. When I called my mom she told me the driver just called her to say he is 15 minutes out.

I turned around asap and the Cobra was already turned off and the driver down the road by the time I pulled in to my mom's driveway. I waved at him as he passed us again after doing his u-turn. The guy was quick! After checking the car over I double checked the ramps one more time which were kicked out of position by the driver and was able to drive the car on the ramps.

The car idled for about 30 minutes. What a **** up the night turned out to be. I've had the Cobra for over 15 years and this is the first time this happened. Now I really appreciate the new keyless remote systems.

This long of a thread ... because a car idled 30 minutes....
Lol yes it was a mouthful - had to get it off my chest!

Looks like it is easy to unlock it but the guy in this video appears to have scratched his door lock. I'll take a peak at the door lock next time I stop by my mom's house.

Get a basic key cut and place behind license plate.

Next time you will only need to find screw driver

Last time I locked keys in car. I used coat hanger and pulled door handle
No need to call a guy

Have you ever sat in a traffic jam? Funny thing, the engineers at Ford designed the vehicle to idle. They are are smart like that.
Yes I sat in a traffic jam a few years ago and the car overheated. The radiator fan failed. Fortunately nothing was damaged but it did burp and spilled coolant all over the parking lot. These cars are 15 years old and things fail on them. Like radiator fans!

Nice. Or just don't lock yourself out?! I won't be doing this dumbass move again. I'll probably keep the spare key at her house also. The car is stored in her garage because I have woodwork going on in my garage.

15 minutes idle? Nothing the Terminator can't handle. LOL.

Hell, I remember going to a conference in North Carolina a few years ago. One participant rented a car and parked it in a lot the day we were going on an all-day tour. Well, she never shut off the car and locked the doors. It idled for almost 8 hours!!! She was more than shocked when she got back to find her car running.

My truck gets turned on around 7am and doesn’t get turned off until I get home that day. Sits at idle for hours ... in front of my office. At job sites. Everywhere.

almost as if...

..OP .. insane how the designers of cars didn’t just build them to explode from sitting at idle..

yaaaa new edge cars are super easy to get into, especially with the key forward or engine running. A lady in our office would always sit in hers on break and locked her keys in there. They got a coat hanger in there easy enough but were having trouble hitting the unlock button just due to the angle. I walked up after 15 minutes of them screwing around, grabbed the coat hanger and hit the window down button and walked away

A co-worker a few years back was having intermittent issues with his starter. He came into work on a Friday and didn't want to risk getting stuck there after work and let his car run the whole 8 hour shift...

Lol my friend who was a co worker was about a half hour late to work one day during winter but wouldn't tell me why. When lunch time came around he asked if I would take him to his house and that's when he told me the story.

He went out to start his car in the driveway to warm it up and went back inside. When he came back out he realized he locked himself out of his car with it running. He tried for as long as he could to get the door opened but eventually took off running to work (he ran cross country in high school). At some point he flagged down a complete stranger and got a ride to work.

Midway through the morning he got a call from his parents worried because his neighbors had called them worried about him. The neighbors said the front door of his house was wide open and his car was running in the driveway lol. At lunch time I take him to his house and he shuts the front door and finally get the door unlocked on his car.

Besides the humiliation, larger heating bill for his house that month he burned a 3/8 tank of gas. He did luck out though because the boss was so impressed at his drive to get to work he wasn't in trouble.

Trying to save your thread op.

Stuck at the drive through while they cook my food, I may need a new motor.
