I'd go cobra kit car, but mine would have an FE. You could probably find a nice one for close to your budget.

My other car is a 64-65 falcon 2 door hardtop. Basically just a mustang chassis but not as common and in my opinion better looking. I wish I still had my 65 today. I'm hoping I can talk my daughter into one when she's older, I've got 14 yrs until she can drive lol.

So I've heard of people throwing the liter+ bike engines in stripped down SmartCars, but how has no one chopped the top on a smart car, thrown it on a longer chassis with an exposed v8 rat rod/open wheel hot rod style? If I had **** you money, it'd be something to get a few laughs out of

My money would be on
1. 65-67 Fastback with a 351-408, lumpy cam, side exhausts, TKO-600, disc brakes, and A/C.
2. 65-68 Coupe. 408, TKO-600, gutted, roll bar, fat tired all the way around, full suspension, like 1960's Trans Am car.
3. 66-67 Fairlane, BBF, Manual trans, Big tires out back, lots of chrome.
4. 67-72 F-100 BBF C6 with GV od, little rake, Performance Red.
5. 49-55-ish Shoe box Ford, SBF 4-spd, a little low, Primer black, Nickel plated trim.

Those are the builds I'd like to do. I'd also like a completely stock '49-'56 F-100. Some shade of green, flathead 6 or V8.
Oh and #6. 1961-64 Galaxie, BBF, 4spd
