Over the last 12 years we have owned 3 Great Danes. Our latest is a 2.5 year old euro Dane, female, harlequin and about 150lbs. For the last several months we have been feeding her a food that was recommended by the breeder. It’s not available to the public in that you have to join there ‘club’ to buy it, or buy it from a person who’s a member. It’s $90 for a 40# bag and lasts two weeks.

Recently we started shopping for a new food solely based on $180-200 per month. So, I’m wondering what each of you feed your giant breed dogs?

Sheesh, they have a good system set up. Buy my dog, then you need to by this outrageously priced food.

I have a 5 year old English Mastiff. She's 150-160lbs. She eats Blue Buffalo Lamb and Rice. We have a subscription set up through www.chewy.com, shipped to our door under $50.

Shit make your own for that money. Boiled chicken, brown rice, carrots, a few vitamins and you're there.

I know you asked for Giant breed, but my ex had a German Shepherd. She was a veterinary technician as well. She used Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach. Her pup would get red and scratchy, and the Pro Plan helped alleviate most of those issues. If you look at the ingredients list, its all quality stuff. Not all Purina brand stuff is good (hardly) but Im a believer in Pro Plan.

When we split and I inherited "our cat" (hers) I stuck him on Pro Plan salmon. Not a single health issue and hardly any vomiting.

She absolutely detested "grain-free". All animals need some fiber in their diet. Pointed out to me that Wolves go for and eat the guts of the herbovores they killed to get the fiber that was usually found in there.

Blue Buffalo is all hype in my opinion.

My wire hair pointer is on Purina Pro Plan. Unfortunately, their protein levels are too high for a giant breed dog.

Back when I had a Mastiff I fed him Canidae with no problems. For a less expensive option a lot of people on the Mastiff forum I was a member of recommended Kirkland from Cosco. It was supposedly decently high quality and worked well for a lot of people’s dogs.

Fed my previous bull mastiff Orijen and stuck with it for my current English Mastiff. It’s a great kibble but for some reason the proteins they offer just didn’t work for consistent poops for my EM. Recently switched to Zignature and it has been great. Lots of protein choices, a lot cheaper than Orijen and no runny lawn mines to clean up.

Asking large breed dog owners which dog food is the best, is like asking 100 car enthusiasts which car is the best. lol

To answer the OP's question, we feed our two adult Danes Purina Pro Plan FOCUS Adult Large Breed Formula Dry Dog Food.

.

I never asked what you thought the best food was. I simply asked what you fed your dogs so I can compare a few that are at least recommended by someone who owns a giant breed dog.

Giant Alaskan malamute here, 12 years old and still eating Logic dry food from our local seller. No health issues at all, and she keeps a slender profile like our vet suggests. 1 cup in morning, 1 cup at night. Plus only fresh scraps such as lettuce, brocolli, carrots, fat from steak etc. when we chop stuff up for dinner. Good luck with your new dog!

Just to be clear, the first part of my post was just a statement meant to be humorous, nothing more. Hence the "lol".

The next part answered your question.
