Re-frame the question to temperatures rather than income.

Mid to high 60's temperature means what? To me, this means it'll be 66 to 69 degrees. It certainly does not indicate 62 degrees.

Temps in the "upper 80's" means 87-89 degrees, not 83.

I think it depends on where your located.. 150k in the SF bay area is below poverty.. 150k in Alabama where I live and you're ****ing living like you're making 500k in the SF area.. I'd much rather make 150 living in a low cost area than 500k in SF lol

$300k individual salary based income (ie excluding bonus/perks/commissions/etc) working for someone else (ie you're not the boss/owner/partner/etc) is pretty damn good IMO.

The question isn't:

1.) What's a good salary
2.) What can you live off of
3.) Which part of the country has higher costs of living
4.) Who's on third

The question is, "what do you consider a HIGH six figure yearly income?"

Fer cryin out loud Nick. You ask the question like it’s in a vacuum and nothing else is relevant. Everything is relevant. COL, debt, assets.

That's exactly what he's doing... he is asking it in a vacuum, purely from a statistical standpoint. Not a relative standpoint based on all other factors. The social experiment has proven that many people view and answer the question based on their situation/perspective, and not on a $100,000-$999,999 scale. Most can't relate to $999,999 being six figure, but more around $200,000 being the max. This, that's why so many have answered in the $175,000 range.

I think Nick got the answer he was looking for. Most aren't good at math.

Nick,
Let’s just cut to the chase! I have had your answer since the thread was started. I will enlighten everyone with the answer and my vast knowledge, but! I will need a 2020 GT500 allocation in return!Seems like a fair trade! I’m sure someone will give up their allocation for the answer! Anyone? Anyone?

I’m ready to hear why this was done also. The answer seems very black and white to me. To assign actual number descriptors on opinion and variables, instead of simply what they are, is quite strange to me.

My answer would be North of 250k because per the article there’s only 1-2% of the population above you at that point. I don’t need to be a 1%er, I’d be just fine in the top 5%.
As for the article Nick I’d like to see them breakdown per county in NY, CA, Fla, and Alaska. I bet the variations per county are huge.
They are here in Ohio, I can’t imagine how bad they are in those states though.

To summarize, a question was asked about your opinion on a situation. If you guess the wrong answer, you get mocked for being too emotional, only applying the answer to your own situation or not understanding the question.

Hmmm....this sounds like what I go through when the wife asks my opinion and I don't guess what she already knows I should have answered if I had even the slightest shred of common sense. Stuff like 'What do you want to have for dinner tonight' or 'Do I look good in this?' or 'What do you think a high six figure income is?'

On this we can agree. :p

But I was told there would be no math on this forum.

Seriously though, a friend of mine has a “C” level job with Cisco, and in jobs like that with a “C” and an “O” in the title we typically don’t use the expression “high six figures”, or “mid six figures”, or even “seven figures”. I have however probably referred to his income as a “shitload” before. :D

Because the day this started I was speaking to a guy, and he was explaining to me that he just got a raise and that he was making a "high six figure salary" now. Then two sentences later, he told me he was making $130k.

My answer would be North of 250k because per the article there’s only 1-2% of the population above you at that point. I don’t need to be a 1%er, I’d be just fine in the top 5%.

Hm, interesting take.
