I remember watching an interview with Jay Leno a few years ago and he pretty much said exactly that. You can never know which car or marque might become valuable in the future, so you may as well buy what you like, and enjoy it.
And to add, the flavor of the week cycles too. Tri-5 Chevys, especially ragtops spiked, then dropped.
Earlier days, Mopars were the bottom of the barrel. Then, boom! They demanded peak prices.
As of late it's 50's pickups. What's hot next? It's anyone's guess.
Like I say, buy what you like, enjoy it. Life's too short.

07-09 GT500’s have really ranked. I remember people paying way over sticker for 07’s.

It’s been 13 to almost 14 years since the first ones showed up in 2006. Yes, the 07-09 cars have depreciated, but they have done so more slowly than many other cars from the era.

As for paying over sticker... ADMs don’t factor into depreciation. The ADM is between the 1st buyer and the dealer and does not raise the value of the car once it leaves the lot.

You can get an 07-09 for mid 20’s I believe they were 45k new some paid way more than that.

MC is an amazing color and the values on the low mile cars will always go up. SB is a beautiful color and you could probably feel less "guilty" about driving it. Can't go wrong with either color though.

I answered your FB post and I'll answer here too. The low mile Comp O, SB and MC cars will always command a premium, especially as the miles get lower and time passes. Also, it'll sell quickly because there will always be a buyer. There was a guy who bought a 10K mile MC coupe for over $40K over the summer. Two Comp O's went for over $34K too. I also saw a MC coupe go for $34K on eBay with 7200 miles. (that was more realistic than the $40K MC)

If you want it, I would get it.
Lol i've seen a MC roller sell for 15k

I really wonder about the low mile cars. I don't buy them to collect. To be honest, I buy them because I feel that a low mile, 1-2 owner car with little or no mods, will be less 'abused' than a higher mile car or a car with multiple owners or with tons of mods. I see the Youtube videos and I read the forums where people complain about cars that have been through a lot of hands or who has tons of mods and the quality and craftsmanship are bad, etc.

Consequently, those are also the cars that collectors want too. It makes me wonder if people are buying the lower mile cars for the same reason I am. My old 4900 mile vert, someone in upstate NY bought it and is starting to mod the hell out of it.

I'm not going to read all the pages... but it depends on your intention. If you want a car to mod, drive, and enjoy... it is a terrible idea. You are putting good money into a depreciating asset in that case because by not keeping it the way you find it, you will devalue it with miles and use.
If you are buying it as a collector because you think it will gain value, but arent really a collector... i.e. you dont enjoy the ownership without the useage... then you are tying up good money on a gamble that it will appreciate. It may appreciate, but there are much better investments that are far more liquid and can be just as engaging... i.e. you can play with the money, and watch it grow, much like you can watch your car and keep it clean.
If you are truly a collector, you enjoy owning the car with only occasional use, and want to own it and consider it an investment... then go for it.

Collecting cars is a narrow field. Some people love it, most will own the car and rehome it or drive it before long, never gaining much if not losing from the transaction.

Just my opinion. In the end, it is only money.

Collecting cars will always be a tough game to play and I have. Like @COOL COBRA said earlier buy these rides because you love the hobby and have the passion. I have owned short of 60 rides since 1974 mostly high performance and had some great ones. But I never bought them as an investment. My investment money has always gone into stocks and real estate. Over the long haul it will be a much better return. I have been around this hobby for about 45 years and the best thing about it is being around other people/enthusiasts who enjoy it as much as I do. My retirement will be near Ocean City MD. and I will continue to enjoy my favorite hobby there with the great people who are also obsessed like me. And you are correct its only money.

You bring up a good point. That's why I'm real hesitant to go past pulley, intake exhaust and tune. Once you go past that, it gets that much harder to sell the car. Not that I plan on selling, but you never know what curveballs life will throw at you.

Some times you win and other times you lose.

I feel I lost on my Roush. Paid 50K new (25K for car and 25K for Roush add ons). I'll never see 50K back on that car, not even half. Lost my @$$ on that purchase.

However, I feel I won on my Cobras. Paid 27K for my coupe in 07 and paid 16K for my vert in 16. I feel if I hold on to my Cobra's I can at least break even on them.

So, you roll the dice and live with the results.

And yes color is very subjective. My favorite Cobra color is DSG, then SB and then MC. I would never own a CO, SY or ZY Cobra. But that's just me. I'm probably the only guy who would own a red and silver Cobra with checkers on the QTR panels lmao!

I don't know man, there's a guy on the FB group with a 300 mile Mystichrome that's still in the wrapper and another with an authentic Saleen Mystichrome. I can't imagine modding or beating on those 2 cars.

I get it. To each his own, do what you want with the car. I know there have been several threads about this recently, about buying these cars with the notion that they'll be worth a butt load one day. But the emblem on the car still says Ford, not Ferrari.

For me, if it's going to sit most of the time in a garage and will remain pristine - MC.

If going to be enjoyed and worried less about - SB.

Roush Mustangs have always had steep depreciation curves. One of the problems is there is tropically not a “Roush” category when looking up values. SVT Cobras have been good though and the 1-off or 1-year only cars have done quite well.

If everyone modded and beat their cars, there would be no nice/pristine examples left.

I totally get that this is more of a mod/race crowd, but these cars can be a fun place to put some excess $ in. People buy for different reasons. I haven’t bought my cars as “investments.” I have financial investments in that department. I bought the cars because I enjoy having them. While it’s nice to see prices shooting up on my SVT Cobras, I have no plans to sell them and will most likely hand them over to my sons at some point. I just get satisfaction from ownership and I do drive some of them occasionally.

There are certain cars, from years ago, that if I could get my hands on in a pristine, low miles, low owner condition, and if I had space, I would never mod them, drive them, etc. I would keep them numbers matching and would get the sheer satisfaction out of just staring at them, washing them, talking about them to fellow enthusiasts and maybe, taking them to shows.

I've been to a ton of car shows over the the years and the cars that pull in most of the awards are from the mid to late sixties. Full on restorations, customs and street rods from the big three are the most popular. If the car is perfect down to the fender bolts, mileage isn't a factor. With enough money, you can turn anything into gold.

Does mid to late sixties mean the same thing in San Francisco as it does in Alabama?
