Except it's not relative. $1mil a year is $1mil a year any where in the country.

Same with $20k a year.

We're not talking about buying power, etc.. Just the number itself. $175k a year is a healthy living the vast majority of the country, but not even in Somalia is it high six figure income.
Some people believe it’s high 6 figure when $180/190k and it’s a low 6 figure when it’s $110/120k.

If $195k is a high 6 figure income is $201k a low 6 figure income? After all 01 is a lot lower than 95...

One is perspective, the other simple math. If you cant do simple math, its a fair bet your perspective will be skewed to the low side. Doesn't change the math.

Literally in the name.... six figures, so $100k or more. Then there are "ranges".

6 figures $100k
Mid 6 figures $150k
High 6 figures $175+

$200k 300k 500K, I don't know what the lingo is since I don't know anyone in that range.

These are all 6 figures, even if you don't know anyone in that range.

For me I think it depends the line of work people are in. If I’m around a bunch of average joes and one of them says they make high 6 figures I think $350k+. If I’m around a bunch of doctors and one of them says it then I think $700k+

I wasn’t referring to buying power. It all has to be relative. If I make 20k a year and someone makes 100k I’d venture to say they would think that’s high 6 figures. Someone who makes 200k a year is not going to say 300k is high six figures.

If you make under 120k and live in the Bay Area you are considered at the poverty level. Therefore, someone that lives in the Bay Area is going to have a skewed idea of what a high Six figure income.

I know personally that at 175k a year in the Bay Area you’re barley making it

Regardless of where one lives and what they make $120k is barely six figures and way under when taxes are taken out.

Again if a job advertised high 6 figure potential and the cap was $180k I’d be pissed as they advertised the capability of making $700k or more.

I was a headhunter for 25 years, and we never discussed salaries in terms like "high six figures”. I was very specific when discussing salary because if the employer said $150-175K, they usually meant $150 (ideally), and if I quoted that range to a prospective candidate, guess what they were thinking. That’s right, $175,000. So we were already $25K apart before we got out of the gates.

So in the real world amongst real professionals who were earning between $100K and $200K, I never once used or heard the term used “high six figures”.

It’s hyperbole, or dick measuring if you will, depending on the breadth of your vocabulary.

I agree with OETKB. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say "high six figures" before unless they were a total tool bag. And in that case, I probably wouldn't be around them.

My best friend from high school who is finishing up his residency in Radiology never talks about making six figures when he finishes. People that are confident in themselves don't need to talk about their salary all the time. They know that people know they make money. It doesn't need to be stated.

I find that the people who talk about their salary generally have shit lives and it makes them feel better if they can tie their self-worth and importance to their salary. These are the same people who post on Facebook every day looking for attention.
