like the title says - 2005 350 with the 6.0. "Cold" starts are a bitch and getting worse, taking longer and longer to where you start to worry about killing the batteries. It can be in the 80s outside and still does the same thing. Once it fires up it runs perfectly, plenty of power, mileage is normal etc... just not sure what all to check.

I think it was November of 2016 it got new batteries, highout put alternator and new FICM. The HPOP was done under warranty, doesn't seem to be leaking. The truck is bone stock outside of a bulletproof EGR cooler and and coolant filter.

I'd appreciate any guidance on trouble shooting this thing. I have an X4 from the mustang I could use and also have the livelink software.

Welcome to the club. There's really no simple fix honestly. Going to have to do a lot of diag to figure it out. X4 helps. But probably need more of a diesel scanner, Scan Gauge 2 or something.

Would first start with checking oil pressures: Oil filter full after sitting 12hours? OEM Filter and Cap?
Also remove the icp sensor on passenger side valve cover of motor / next to glow plug relay / alternator; make sure the oil rail is full. if not probably have a stand pipe, dummy plug, or injector draining oil. That rail should be full.
Check icp pressure and ipr % during cranking. Injectors need 500psi to fire. Engine should fire up within 3-5 seconds of cranking. If icp hangs around 300psi or less. Pull the Ipr Valve by the turbo and check the screen. Lot of times the screen will be clogged. limiting oil flow.

Also How many miles on the truck? 148k is usually when stock injectors went bad. There is updated injectors, stand pipes, and dummy plugs.

Would recommend getting on a 6.0 psd form and looking up from there.

Strangely enough it’s randomly starting ok cold and looooong when hot. I need a better scanner, can’t see some of the pids i need but expecting standpipes or dummy plugs. I guess injectors are possible as well, it’s just over 150k miles

I'd let it sit. pull that icp sensor and see if the oil rail if full. Its easy to pull the passanger side valve cover and pull the standpipe and dummy plug. Check the rubber o-ring on them.

My truck was sort of doing the same thing. Was chasing my tail. Found one problem after another. Had a shop replace all the injectors. Long and the short of it. Ending up finding out the shop only changed 2 bad injectors and not all 8 like i told them, but charged me for 8. I put 8 new injectors in and truck starts better than new. So if you do find that the injectors / or 1 is failing, replace them all.

TR diesel sells a tool on amazon that uses air to find the leaks through the IPR instead of the ICP . It closes the system so you find it immediately without using a scanner or jumper wire to close the IPR . It's $130 and worth every penny .

update/resolution: It somehow got a little better on cold starts but hot starts were a mother... replaced the dummy plugs and stand pipes while the valve covers were off. The injectors didn't show any signs of leaking air. We'll see how it goes but so far it's muuuuuuch quicker starting.
