I'm with those that say $750. 100-250 low 6, 251-749 mid. Maybe a job applicant heard wrong when told the manager would have to be high to give him 6 figures.

There are a lot of interesting answers in here. It's a bit surprising, actually.

edit: @13COBRA out of curiosity, did you post this on other forums? How did the answers compare?

If I told you I was going to hire you and pay you a high six figure income, would you assume it's $150-199k or $600k+?[/QUOTE]

First you would have to pick me up off of the floor, I would say 700-800k is high six figures in my opinion.

I belong to a private Facebook group with a few thousand members. All are entrepreneurs, business owners, CEOs, etc. I was speaking with a friend of mine and he referred to $150k as a high six figure income.

So I posed the question to them. Ironically enough, I caught all kinds of shit because they thought I was demeaning people who made <$200k a year, when in reality I was literally just asking their opinion about what a high six income figure was.

I fall in the ball park of $100-130k here in SoCal, public municipality employee (water). I’ve made that since I’ve journeyed out 7 years ago, my manager caps out right around $150k. So to me $150-200k is a high 6 figure income as I’ll probably never get close to $200k. Unless the big one hits and I’m at work for 6mo straight knocking out the OT. I’m perfectly content with my income and I get to do what I want and live how I want within my means. Making $90-100k a year is plenty enough to live comfortably as long as you live within your means.

"High 6 figure" shouldn't be comparative to what others are making. It should be compared to all 6 figures. $100,000-999,999. $200,000 is only 20% up the scale, so how can that be considered "high"?

Shift it down a scale. If somebody told you they make "high 5 figures", would $20,000 qualify? Nope, but $75,000+ would be more accurate.

High six figures 750k+
Mid six figures 400-600
Low six figures 100-250

That’s how I look at it anyway based on my income.

Bingo. I'd say this is exactly right.

That's a great salary. You can make some good money in municipal water. I have a few buddies who do that for work also.

I think it all depends on your current state. If I were in my 20’s and looking at a job working in the automotive industry I would consider 150K as meeting the definition.

I am in my 50’s and have been at the Senior Exec Level for a multi- billion firm so my expectation would be much different than 150K.

That’s very true. I guess I was comparing it to the amount of people who don’t make any kind of 6 figure income.

Haha. I know right? Inflation is something else!

End of the day, percentages are constant, regardless of the variable you're applying them to. Percentages can be used the gauge of the "range" we are attempting to define, into 3 categories.

Low = 0-33.3%
Mid = 33.4-66.6%
High = 66.7-100%

So, I actually contradicted myself and have to change my position. $667,000 is high six figure..
Rounding of course.

It doesn’t depend on the actual numbers, but the wage range for a position/job. If you know the wage range for a certain position is $120K-$250K and the employer states they are willing to give you “high 6 figures” then I would expect $225K+. Given there is just not that many jobs that pay $600K+ I wouldn’t expect someone to be saying they get paid that much or more if they said high 6 figures.

If you came to buy a car, and you asked how much, and I told you "high teens", would you think I was referring to $10,000, or $16,500-19,999?

Between 15-20k would be in the high teen mark. Just honestly being me i would expect to pay 20k.

So 'high teens' results in you thinking $15-20k, or the highest of the teen numbers.

So why wouldn't 'high six figure income' result in you thinking $650k-999,999?

Because that goes well beyond anything that I had ever been exposed to so my mentality is a limiting factor. I’m one of those that would be happy at a 150k a year household and that reaches my limits of what I think about

Let me put it to you like this @13COBRA if you offered me a high 6 figure salary and said it was 150k a year I would be as happy as a pig in shit. Now if you said it as being over 500k I wouldn’t know how to take that because I couldn’t even fathom how to spend that much.

THIS.

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for, and my point for the first conversation I had about this.

We [as human beings] limit our own potential based on our limited thinking. We choose to give up on things, not do things, etc etc etc...because we don't think it's possible.
