If I told you I was going to hire you and pay you a high six figure income, would you assume it's $150-199k or $600k+?

I would probably assume it would be $100.000.01.

Most employers use vague terms like "six figure income" to inflate the perception of how much they'll actually pay you.

I say anything $250,000 on up as there are plenty of people making $100,000 around my neck of the woods Canton Ohio area.

$150K is not a lot. I would have to say $500K+ is starting to get there.

I'm not asking whether it's a lot or not..just what you consider a HIGH SIX FIGURE INCOME.

If someone strutted into the bar and started chirping about 6 figures, and then told me 100k is what they make a year, i'd lol and change seats. 100-200k a year household is really just two college educated adults (or tradespeople). Nothing special or shocking about that. All it takes is two people to make 50k a year and suddenly you're in the "6 figure household" club.

Wife makes jack shiz and I make average money. We still collectively pull close to 100g's. Kind of hard not too. Even if I worked at a Firestone we'd pull close to that.

So a "High six figure inventory" would be 500+

If you paid me either of those dollar amounts I would move out and work for you lol.

If someone tells me they make 6 figures I tend to think it starts with a 1. If someone told me they make "high six figures," I would assume it's closer to the next number that starts with a 1.

Per your poll, the choice of $650k+ would be my interpretation of a high six figure income. $150k - $199k, by my standards, would be a high paying job.

But, you can't forget about assets....:D

Six figures starts when that 6th digit is added. But like it was already stated, 100 grand in rural Nebraska is royalty, 100 grand in boston is almost 2nd class. In the area I am in, $250,000 is a comfortable income level. So high 6 figure to me would be in the last 25%, 750k and up. Or age 38 to 43 lol

I thought of it in relation to actually what I could make. As engineering management I could make in the High $100s, so high 6 figures means that to me. I could never fathom the idea of back true high 6 figures lol.

I think High 6 figures is more like $200-300k, only because I think that's the cap of what people actually get paid. I don't think there's really that many salary positions pulling in over 300-400k a year, at that point you're either self employed and doing pretty well, or C suite and probably making something like 7 figures, or your income is heavily stock and incentive based.

I'd rather win the Powerball twice a year, get a blowjob with breakfast and dinner, be able to work from the moon, etc...

Yes, assets are incredibly important.

But this discussion has nothing to do with assets. lol

Thanks for clarifying.

High is $650K or better as a base but $150-199K sneaks into the high category if the compensation includes the hummers.

Edit: would guaranteed future BJ's (banked or unused past hummers) be considered an asset for this discussion? If yes, it might just change my answer to an even lower limit.

I fall in the ball park of $100-130k here in SoCal, public municipality employee (water). I’ve made that since I’ve journeyed out 7 years ago, my manager caps out right around $150k. So to me $150-200k is a high 6 figure income as I’ll probably never get close to $200k. Unless the big one hits and I’m at work for 6mo straight knocking out the OT. I’m perfectly content with my income and I get to do what I want and live how I want within my means. Making $90-100k a year is plenty enough to live comfortably as long as you live within your means.

Interesting responses given in this thread as there are so many variables. But, since I'm bored at work, I found this on the all knowing Google:

Since MOST people I know and work with are making less than 100K now, I would say I think high six figure would mean north of 150K. I think what would determine someones answer is what their current salary range is for their profession. I am in healthcare IT so if you told me high six figures, 500K+ would seem more like a fantasy to me rather than 150K.
