Hello!

So my car is at 750-800rwhp (gen1 tvs, dual pumps, 1050id, long tube headers, e85, etc)and I’d like to throw cams at it BUT I keep being told that she will let go... Had her like this all summer with a lot of passes at the track without issues. My question is since the rods are the weak link, if I upgrade them and throw cams at it will she live? Whats the motor good for after rods upgrade? Id like to keep the cost down since I dont plan to go any further with power mods after that.

Youre right on the edge. A little too close the the edge to be considered safe TBH. Absolutely correct, the rods are the weak link. The Mahle Forged Pistons are pretty stout as shipped from the factory.

Problem with the JDM/Mahle Cobra Jet piston set is that they are .001" over factory bore. They WILL require the block to be diamond honed .001". Problem is that the PTWA liners may or may not have that .001" for all 8 cylinders. Some blocks can get honed, some cant. Some blocks have 7 out of 8 cylinders pass, but 1 goes through to the aluminum.

The spray bore PTWA liner is very robust, and the 11-12 block is regarded as one of the strongest blocks available. But, if your hone attempt fails, your block is going to require sleeves and the machine work that goes with it. Make no mistake, the JDM Cobra Jet spec Mahle pistons are absolutely STOUT. But you need to be prepared for sleeves should honing fail.

In the same boat as you. I was going for an all out build, but real life events have popped up and cant do pistons or sleeves. Will be installing my already purchased Oliver rods; getting the rotating assembly balanced and popping the pistons and rings back in to their respective cylinders. I may upgrade to Trend Performance H-13 tool steel wrist pins for peace of mind.

Thanks for the response, I think I will skip the piston upgrade and do the same thing you plan to do.

Dont get me wrong, if you have any plans to want to go make big boy power (1000+ whp), sleeves and pistons are a must. Diamond makes great Mod2k pistons complete with wrist pins and rings for $1k.

But for 800-900 wheel, forged rods and factory Mahle pistons will live a good life.
