Ugh...I think I hurt my car...

Well, I think my 2013 with only 4100 miles is hurt. Not sure how or why, but something sounds off. I came back from a leisurely cruise and when I pulled in the garage I noticed a noise. If anyone has any advice here or speculation as to what this might be, please let me know!

Here's a couple video clips of the noise. In this first video, behind the injector noise, you can hear the sound. It seems like a tapping noise. This was the morning after I noticed the sound...I warmed up the car to 180 degrees ECT and this is what it sounds like:

The night before when I first noticed the noise, it was way more pronounced (the engine was also closer to 200deg ECT). There was the knocking type noise, but also what almost seemed like a grinding noise. It definitely doesn't sound like it's coming from the supercharger or a pulley.

I'm going to take it to a shop, but my spidey senses tell me that it's hurt and will need to be opened up. What do you guys think?

Perhaps I have a good excuse for a built motor, but maybe it's a simple fix? Also, do you think the car sounds ok enough to drive to a shop (not a long trip)...it seems to drive fine, just has that engine noise.

p.s. if anyone knows any good shops around Oklahoma, let me know. I'm open to any advice at this point. Cheers.

I stay pretty far away from the rev limiter, usually shift around 6k.

Last oil change was 600 miles ago (2 months ago). Amsoil 10W40. Oil levels look fine, oil smells good, looks good.

I'd really love to know what the heck that grinding noise is in the 2nd video. Maybe hurt valve or a lifter, and the grinding is from a timing chain tensioner? It's just odd that it was very noisy after the drive, then the next morning the tapping was all I could hear (no grinding).

On my 04 Cobra I had hurt the 7/8 pistons. It sounded like the tick from up top but when I got under the car it was apparent. Try that....I had the engine replaced...hope that's not the case for you.

List of all the mods and tuner

  • 3.4L Whipple with 3.75 pulley and a Gates Racing Belt (was running a 3.25 pulley, but swapped it so I could learn the car a bit before going that high on the boost...the 3.25 pulley was pretty spicy).
  • Whipple Intake
  • Ford Racing Twin 67 throttle body
  • ID1050X injectors
  • VMP BAPs
  • ARH long tubes
  • Corsa Cat-back
  • tuned by VMP a few months ago, 93 octane. no dyno yet.
  • Passenger and drivers side catch cans...not a drop on the drivers side, a nothing out of the ordinary on the passenger.

Bought the car back in late June from a guy that originally had it built at Hennessy. The car was running rich as pig in the mud, so I had VMP re-tune it. I gave it a fresh set of o2 sensors, spark plugs, oil change, transmission fluid swap. The car ran amazing until a few days ago. Nothing out of the ordinary...I didn't beat on the car exceptionally hard, just some spirited driving.

Im assuming stock motor still?

Its very possible the prior tune/owner did some damage that wasn't noticeable when you bought the car. Also car is pretty well modded running on 93 pump gas. 1 bad tank could push the limits. What was timing set at?

Hard to say man, I'm assuming the shop you're taking it to will do a compression test, that will tell you if you hurt a piston. Hopefully it's nothing serious.

Yes, everything inside the motor is stock. Most timing I ever saw was around 18 degrees, and usually around 15 degrees in the hot summer months. Also, the place I get my gas is pretty reliable....they sell e90, 101 octane and a bunch of other nice fuels. Not an impossible situation, but I would like to think that wouldn't happen with this gas station.

Thanks for the advice everyone - if anyone has any other ideas on where to start first, let me know. I'll do a compression test here in the garage to see what I can find, then probably trailer it up to a local shop. It runs and drives fine, I'm just a little bit scared to put any miles on it and have something let go.

Anyone know of any good shops in the Oklahoma/North Texas area that are good with Mustangs? I've got a couple local shops here in OKC in mind, but I don't have any personal experience with them. Open to recommendations if you guys know any good shops within a 4 hour drive of OKC!

Well...once I figure out what's going on here, if I end up doing the built motor, I'll take lots of pics and post them here!

I agree with a compression test and check all the plugs see if any look abnormal. Even post some pictures

damn def sounds like something in the valve train but who knows. Also who knows what the other dude who owned it did to it. But best of luck I am pushing mine at the limit as well but dont beat on it either but I have cams to help with the boost.

I know PSE superchargers is in Oklahoma city, might be worth giving them a call, but I have heard mixed reviews on them

Trevor at tricky performance, I believe is around ( ironically) Mustang, Oklahoma. he does great work!

Great to hear - I met a guy awhile back that had a nitrous 3V built by Trevor and he said it was a really great experience. Mustang is only about 30 minutes from me. Tricky Performance and Archangel Motorsports (over in Tulsa) were the two shops I had looked at. I'll definitely give Trevor a call - thanks for the recommendation!

Any updates on what it is?

Hey! Thanks for the follow-up, I haven't had a chance to take it to a shop yet...waiting to get a few phone calls back from the ones I called. I'm going to try to pull plugs and do a compression/leak down test this weekend.

Only update for now is that I'm getting a quote from Tim at MPR on a built motor :) I'll keep you guys posted on what ends up happening!

In the meantime, I get to fix an exhaust manifold leak on my daily driver Ram 1500. Those stupid exhaust manifold are junk...only 50k miles and they are warped, sheared off a couple bolts, leading to a leak. I wish GT500 parts were as cheap as Ram truck parts. Two exhaust manifolds, gaskets, and hardware are less than $300. LOL!!! At least this is something I can fix in my garage...there's not much a welder and a few curse words can't fix when it comes to stuck bolts!
