Hey guys and gals, I need some help. I've never been in this situation before. I recently bought a 90 mustang coupe. And I also have a 03 cobra. Currently I only have a single stall garage.

I flip flop cars from time to time. I have a storage unit I rent. My cobra has always been stored in my garage and now I'm thinking the storage unit might be better for it.

Of the two cars my cobra overall is nicer and worth more.

My garage is far from perfect. I live in Minnesota, it gets super cold, dry and temp changes drastically. It's not insulated, I've had mice in there years ago. But I leave traps up and haven't had problems in years.

However my back yard is woods so I know they are around. In spring my garage sometimes gets water coming up from the foundation once the snow starts melting. And my car gets crazy condensation on it when temps start changing in the spring. My car cover will be damp and the rims are sweating.

The storage unit is cleaner, and insulated. It has some pest control and cameras. I just don't like the fact that the cobra isn't at my house where it's been for nearly 10 years.

Also the mustang coupe is from down south, first time it's dealing with cold weather. If fluids start leaking or something of that nature, at least it will be in my garage.

Eventually I hope to build a 3 stall garage. I've talked with a Grundy insurance agent a few times to make sure my cobra is covered at the storage unit and provided pictures. She keeps telling me I'm covered.

So what would you do?

How much property do you have?

If you can fit/allowed to have a trailer on your property, a 24' enclosed is a nice tool to have. I kept my car in mine during the dirty season, it seals well enough not even bugs get in it.

They also don't really drop in value unless they get damaged. After 4 years of paying for storage you are probably half the cost of a nice aluminum trailer.

I would keep the Cobra at home but that's just me.

How often do you drive both(or want to) when the weather permits it?

I live in town and my back yard has a hill. The only way to have a bigger garage is tearing the old one down.

The Cobra is primarily at my garage during summer months, unless I'm wrenching on the notch. I'm more so talking about winter storage. Which can be 5-6 months.

I'm not going to get crazy with this garage. As I have future plans for a new garage. I'm strictly talking for winter storage.

A lift is an investment that can be moved to a new garage once built.

If one will fit, that is the best way to go IMO.

Judging by the garage pic, it doesn't look like he has the overhead room.

Bdubbs, I have a similar situation but my garage is attached so the Cobra stays in it for winter. With the storage unit being insulated, I would tend to want to keep it there, assuming it's safe. Either way they are both going to be about the same temp, just less moisture in the storage unit as you already know. My 2c

My garage floor can sweat from temperature swings I lay a plastic sheet I get free from my work and have no more sweating issues on my Cobra. I move my fox to my grandmas garage in the winter which is better insulated than mine. So my wife can park her Escape in the garage in the winter. Cobra stays at the house. I love my fox it’s my 1st car. But the Cobra is worth more and my grandma has some family that visit from time to time and come in thru the garage. I keep it covered there and locked up.

This I my advice.
Lay a sheet of plastic down on the floor of the garage as mentioned above. Purchase a dehumidifier for the garage, it might not take out all the moisture but it will help. My building has insulation in the ceiling only and the dehumidifier keeps the moisture at 50% which is good for south GA. The heat from the unit will help warm up the garage....yea right, not in the north I know.

The Cobra being worth more might be safer at the house, however, I have never had an issue storing a car in a storage unit. It really comes down to which one do you think will provide the driest climate and which car will benefit the most from it.

I feel your pain OP. I have one toy in the garage at home (which is too small to expand and too low to put in a lift) and I have the other toy in an indoor storage facility. Nothing to worry about safety/condition wise except for the sting to my wallet every month.

Good ideas about insulating/dehumidifying the storage container. If it's only a few months, hopefully the condition doesn't suffer.

Good luck.

That's a tough call bro.
I was going to say, keep the car you cherish more at home, but after reading about the mice, I get nervous.
That being said, keep setting up poison traps, using dryer sheets and one more possible deterrent if you can in the garage. One more thing,..............WINTERS ****ING SUCK!!!!! lol

Good luck brother. Keep us posted.

Thanks everyone for your help. I think this first year I'll put the notch in the storage unit. Though overall I think it's a better storage area than my garage. My garage will likely get standing water in it again come spring time.

I also bought another set of race ramp flat stoppers. I've had good luck with them.

My new garage plans have a vaulted ceilings for a 4 post lift.

Yeah, I found the main area on how they were getting in and blocked it off. I keep traps up all year around and haven't seen a trace in years. But I know they are close by.

I never start my car in the winter, mice always looking for a warm place.

And I check the car over weekly.

I don't ever want to be without a lift again!!! That thing gets used more than I ever thought it would.
I remember wondering if I would use it enough to justify buying it. Bahahahahahah

If that's the case, I would leave your most cherised one at home. Better for it to be close by. I would sleep better at night. lol That's just me though.
First world problems, right?? lol
Good luck brother!
