Make sure to put it back to stock first. My guess is the monitors were turned off or missing. They've really started cracking down on the correct number of monitors being available lately.

Local guy got sent to the referee after "passing" smog. I think almost all of his monitors are set to N/A.

You guys a correct, I went this morning and my issue is with the tune in the PCM, the monitors were turned off. The ref told me to install a OEM tune and then drive the car to reset the monitors and then retest, I have the original tune so I will put that back into the pcm. They looked the car over very carefully, everything else was fine, Ca. must have upgraded their test equipment as my car always passed in prior years.

My tune was from 2003 from RWTD, are the new tunes different as in do they keep the monitors turned on ?

Damn. Almost like I went through it recently. ;) At this point your best bet might be getting the car reflashed to stock by the dealer. If you really want to get another tune then you'll probably need to pick up an X3 or X4.

Yeah CA recently went into high gear cracking down on modified cars. Any little thing these days gets you sent to the State Ref. I am glad yours was an easy fix.

I had to install the tune back to stock at the Ford store I worked at and then do a drive cycle to reset the monitors, I have sent the results with photos and now am waiting for a reply. They need to OK the repairs before I can make another referee appointment to get it rechecked.

How did you pass, I know you have more mods than I had?

it's true this state is getting even more effed up by the day

is this whole process any more expensive than the regular smog/registration process? (i mean other than "repairs")

The charge is minimal $8.25 , however there could be a fine, I don't think I will be fined though.

Here is an update on this saga, I worked for a Ford realer until I retired so I went to the dealership and did a PMI PCM reset back to factory Ford specs. Then I did a drive cycle to reset all monitors, took photos and sent them to Ca. referee, they got back to me and said they need me to show paperwork of the reprogram, I made it clear to them with a replay that with more photos of the scan tool hooked to the car with the vin number showing and all monitors passed and no doc's. The next day I received a call from the ref and ask if I would work with him on a test program they are doing, they are sending me a device that I can connect to the obd 2 port and as I drive the car it will send all data back to them. After they see a pass they will unlock my vin and I can have it smoged, I will receive the device on Tuesday, this should be interesting. What happed to a free country!!!!!!

this same thing just happened to me - all these years no problem, but now i can only get smogged at a state bar ref station.

from what i read in another thread though, it may not just be only in california. it sounds like the same thing has happened in other states.

So i dont understand exactly what happend. When you get ref your suppose to go get physically inspected. Why did you not do that?

They wouldn't ok it as I did the reflash myself and I had no receipt for the work. Even when I showed them photos of the scan tool hooked to my car and all monitors reset, they would not let me make an appointment to go back to the ref. They sent me a dongle that I plugged into my obd 2 port, then after they made me drive and put 300 or more miles on my car they told me to go back to my smog man and of course it passed like I knew it would. The truth is I don't think they want you to work on your own vehicle. Then the guy in Sacramento told me he is watching my vin and if it comes up bad again he would pull my registration, I'm about done with Ca. and their natzi policies ! We all have options maybe it's time to move to a state that care about the middle class tax payer!

Montana doesn’t have smog checks or any of that bullshit, but all the lib kalifornia people that move up here vote for the same bullshit that they moved away from. Mental disorders are a strange thing

sad thing. The libtards leaving Commiefornia really think their way is the right way. Yet they are leaving because CA is so expensive. Yet the liberal social programs make the state so expensive to live in.

I’m a proud Hispanic American. But so many of my peeps blindly vote democrat. It’s sickening.

anyways back on point. I was talking to my smog guy on my most recent Terminator purchase. His thought is a car only gets flagged when monitors are set off that the DMV says should be on. I know in the Los Angeles area a car can be sent directly to a STAR smog station during registration renewal instead of any ol smog shop. STAR shops are supposed to be more on the up and up according to the DMV.

i really don’t believe the DMV is targeting certain vehicle for referee inspection. That would open a can of worms that would end up in courts if it were true. For example cops in the LA area are targeting car meets to hand out referre flagged tickets based on exhaust. Yet it’s only the muscle cars and imports car meets. I have never heard of a single exotic car meet being targeted by CHP Or local police. Obviously the guys that can afford exotics can afford top lawyers to really put the hurt on CHP.

I guess we have a poor mans problem at the end of the day.

The land of commies and socialists!

Is this the ONLY way they can tell the car is tuned? I have been reading up on this whole situation lately and finding out that a lot of car guys are having the same problems but the way commiefornia is finding out is different. From what I understand the state computer checks the CVN number. Do these cars transmit this number to the state computer or is that for 05 and up?
