Anyone considering an Explorer ST?

Test drove one today and was very impressed. I think they nailed the exterior looks and the interior was very well laid out. I know the tablet interface is getting a lot of hate, but I love it. The move from bench seat to captains’ chairs is a game changer. As someone that uses the 3rd row and has car seats in the 2nd, a pass through is a must. Throttle response was great, acceleration was great, even the sound was good. That being said, if they are using the same cabin sound resonator that they use in the FoST, I’d probably delete it as I’m not looking for quite THAT much engine noise on acceleration. But overall, I was very happy with it.

The catching point however, as it always is, is price. $55-60k is a lot to swallow for an Explorer (that’s base model Expedition territory, although significantly more fun to drive). I will almost certainly end up with one in the driveway eventually, but it will most likely be a CPO.

I’ve missed my FoST since the day I sold it and even though a hot hatch isn’t feasible anymore, I’m hoping this scratches that itch at least a little bit.

I drove one a few weeks ago and it is nice, but not >$50k nice. I'd jump at $49, but not 50 to 60. The thing that killed it for me was the door handles - felt like my focus st. Thats acceptable for a 25-30k car, but not an 55k Explorer.

Drive the Lincoln Aviator - about the same money with the reserve 1 option. Night and day difference in quality for almost the same cost.

I would think there will eventually be decent rebates on them just like most other mass produced Fords. I have a lease on a 2018 Explorer Sport. If they lease well when mine is up I might look at that. I might also consider buying if they are discounted well enough, but I definitely wouldn't pay anywhere close to 55-60k for one. In a couple of years that will probably be used Trackhawk territory.

This is troll food for the type of shenanigans that have been going on around svtp lately. Surprised they haven't smelled this yet

I actually agree with that statement unless the daily commute is super short.

at 3 years old with 60k+ miles it would be less than half the value new. Is the ST that much better than the sport which you can get at $30k or less now?

Does OP need awd or suv? Scat can be had for less than $40k otd brand new. That’s what I would get!
If I was spending $60k I’d go aviator.

For $55K-60K you may want to look at a leftover 2018 SRT Durango with the 392 (6.4L). You can get the 2nd row captains chairs with the floor console, which is what I have.

I have put 5K miles on mine so far and look forward to starting it up every morning. You got to love a factory 12 sec. 3rd row SUV. :D

For that range I rather go Durango SRT like @Booky posted or an Expedition(unless it's too large for you).

Having owned an used sport Explorer, it was crazy watching the depreciation for the people who owned the truck for a year or two.
Truck that had an MSRP of 48k and I scoop it up for 33k otd 2 years later.

I doubt the ST fares much better depreciation wise

Just to answer a few question, my commute is pretty short (about 14 miles). I made a decision a long time ago when I got into performance vehicles that I’m not going to let low MPG and high gas prices bother me. It’s the price you pay to enjoy the drive.

For those suggesting a 5th gen Explorer Sport, the bench 2nd row is a deal breaker. Plus, I prefer the RWD biased architecture of the 6th gen. I’m also not a fan of the exhaust in the cab issue that they never seemed to totally solve with the 5th gens.

I would consider an Aviator but would most likely prefer the sporty Explorer ST over a base Aviator.

As stated in the OP, this would almost certainly not be a new purchase. 1-2 year old CPO with 30k miles is probably what I’d be looking at.

That Durango SRT sounded mean, but I’m not big on Chryslers. I looked into a couple of Jeep products a little while ago and wasn’t impressed. I’ll take a look again. Although a quick search on CarMax shows a 2018 with 15k miles at $54k. So they’re right up there.

Again, the deal killer for me was the door handles. They had no business being in a $60000 vehicle. Do yourself a favor and go drive a Reserve 1 Aviator. It's not even a fair fight

I’m not digging the Aviator wheels, but the vehicle itself would be preferable over the Ford.

The ST versions of both the Edge and Explorer are okay, but more “Sport” enhancements than true ST packages. I’ve test driven the Edge ST and it was a huge disappointment. The Explorer ST package is better, but not what you’d expect in a true ST (Ford Performance) package.

I read the aviator hybrid is 450hp/600tq. If I was crazy enough to spend that kinda money on the worlds biggest depreciating asset (suv's) thats what id buy. Looks awesome too

I feel the same way. If it is just a faster example of the vehicle it should be called "Sport". For me, the ST means more power/speed AND vastly improved handling. Ford will ruin the ST brand if they keep this current trend going
