I've come to the conclusion a 1/2 ton is a waste of time. If I do buy anything, it may as well be diesel and 4wd. Otherwise there's not much a 1/2 ton could do that I can't with a small trailer or a rent-a-truck from Homedespot

Works for you I guess.

My 1/2 ton pulls my boat and car perfectly and a 3/4 ton is overkill. Having owned a 3/4 ton for 6 years pulling my boat and car all over the country I can say I'd rather have a recent years 1/2 ton. Cheaper maintenance and pulls great. Rides night and day better unloaded too.

Exactly. I would trust a new f150 to better handle towing than a 97 f250. Most guys with a newer 1 ton diesel have never really towed anything heavy enough to see the difference.

I loved my 2004 PS 6.0 (especially after Bulletproofing it). That truck only let me down once in 12 years.

But the 2017 is a better, no a much better truck. The trailer weighs like 3,700 lbs and with the Cobra inside up to 6,200 lbs. This truck pulls it easily compared to the 2004.

Mileage without the trailer on the highway is 16.8, mileage with the trailer loaded is like 13 if I don't get crazy on speed.

E
13 mpg towing a 6K trailer is excellent in my book. I keep hearing very positive things about the new 6.7, even with DEF, SCR etc.

Id love to hear about the revisions to the 2020 6.7 if Ford and Ford Marketing would stop this information embargo bullshit...

A deleted 6.7 Ram 2500 Cummins is my daily driver. Love it. It's a Laramie with all the goodies.

I can't imagine not owning a truck.

Gross.

I couldn’t imagine daily driving mine. After 20 miles in traffic I’m wishing for a sub compact.

Exactly exactly. Love my Cummins for what it is—but what it is NOT is a comfortable dd or economical by any stretch.

Depends on the goals. The half ton overall is cheaper. Registration, tires, maintenance, etc. Honestly I could tow my current stuff with a half ton truck. Although I borrowed a buddies 2014 F150 with the 5.0 to tow my boat after my Expedition was totaled and I wasn't a fan of needing to keep the engine up around 4k RPM to get up the hill I was going up. But it still got the job done. But I know what the future holds and just couldn't see buying a half ton now just to get rid of it for a 3/4 or 1 ton later on.

Although I do keep having day dreams about an F450 someday.

F450 or bust. I see them being daily drivers around me pretty regularly

The only quibble about the F450 to keep in mind is that it uses commercial grade tires. Most 19.5 wheels need to be serviced at commercial truck tire shops. Not as convenient as the 17s found on the F350 dually.

Though, the 19.5s give the 450 it's crazy good hauling/towing abilities

I can’t imagine what it’d be like without a truck. Being at an auto repair shop it’s basically mandatory to have one. My 221k mile Silverado is getting a little tired but it’s not going anywhere. She needs some loving but as good as that truck has been, it’d be foolish to sell it. I’m in the process of acquiring the abandoned Cummins at the shop. It’ll be used as the heavy lifter (car hauling, etc.) around here.

Pick your poison.

Well don't take my statement as me shitting on 1/2 tons. Still good trucks that do a lot for people

But I try to look at practicality, and a 3/4 ton is definitely a more robust truck to run with and tow if it's a diesel over say a newer gas truck. But it won't ride as well, or be as comfortable. I agree there.

My statement was more from a truck sitting on the side of the house to use. If I'm not cruising in the pickup everyday (and don't plan too), then a MPG beater makes sense. A diesel can sit there and be used for heavier duty projects that I may not want to use a gas 1/2 for

If you have cash on hand, you CAN find some deals on a 99-2003.5 7.3L PSD. I dont think the 6.0L powered Super Duties are near as bad as their reputation, but certainly you would need to be diligent about how the 6.0L was cared for if you went that route.

5.9 Cummins are just as legendary as the 7.3L PSD, but the Super Duty is a vastly superior truck.

Always had a truck, although for a while it was a Nissan hardbody that ate trannys. Got 2012 f150 4x4 Lariat in 2014 and 160K mi later the only problem was throttle body replaced under warranty.

I bought this 91 GMC for $150 five or six years ago. I have had to do some stuff to but it's the only 4 wheel vehicle I own. Drives my boss crazy when I drive it to his high dollar golf club.

I feel like the 6.0 truck is kind of the bargain option

As long as I can get it for the right deal, I'm not afraid to pull it down and bullet proof it myself.

look up dieseltechron on youtube. Watching his videos gave me the confidence to be comfortable with a 6.0L purchase. Sadly, he passed away in a car accident a few years ago, but his content lives on.

1/2 ton is good for light duty, even some medium sized camper trailers. Once you get into towing equipment, dump trailers etc they are limited on what they can do. I use a 16 ft dump trailer sometimes and other than making dump runs with it I cant really load it up using my truck (F150).

I’m debating between a newer suv or truck when I need a new vehicle next year. My current 99 Explorer is about to hit 214k and still runs and drives great but I know it’s time to move on soon.

I would like the utility of a truck with owning a home but don’t think I want to drive one full time. I prefer being in something smaller that I can zip around in.

I test drove a 17 GC SRT and loved it but don’t think it was worth $50k for basically a larger engine and some cosmetic changes.

The new ST Explorer is nice but too costly at the moment.

This is the part about buying a car I hate lol.

That'd be a hell of an upgrade

99 Explorer to GC SRT lol
