looking at several 03 cobras. Some have VMP’s installed. Most have the egr deleted and turned off in the tune. Will N.J. inspection stations see this and fail me. If the rear o2’s are turned off same question. Trying to figure out what I need prior to purchase. Basically will the inspection station see emissions stuff turned off or is all they do is check for check engine lights.

Someone with a picture of a cop car as their avatar asking about failing smog for missing equipment? Doesn't seem odd at all.

Does your area do visual checks? Do they do the plug in for the smog test? The new computers out here check for the proper number of monitors available when plugged in. So if your car is supposed to have 7 monitors but only 6 are available it throws a flag. That's different than if they're available, but not set.

Haha. Still wanna get it inspected. I been in new cars the last 10+ years. Last time I did an inspection they just sniffed at the tailpipe but I was told they don’t do that anymore, not sure what they do. Figured someone in here would know.

Dunno about Jersey but NY specs are you're aloud to have 2 monitors not reporting. So if you have no cats you need EGR and vice a versa. Not sure if Jersey is the same. Reason they dont sniffer is their software works better now with the on board and have a better database what should report.

Again NY info not NJ just my 2 cents

What about surroundings counties?
Not every town has emmissin testing

I’m in Poteet no testing here.

Texas is strange. You must do drivers license in your town but can inspect anywhere in Texas.

I’m in nj. since I don’t drive my car all the time I registered it as a collector car it’s only a safety inspection they give you a triangle sticker instead of the standard one . You only get inspected once every 2 years. The only thing is your limited to 6k miles over those 2 years.

when you go to the dmv to register ask them for paper work to register as a collector car they will give you a forum to mail to Trenton. I mailed a copy of the svt certificate to them with the forum and they approved it.
Check online maybe you can get the forum ahead of time

I'm in brazoria. All counties adjacent to Harris (Houston) must pass inspection

Are you saying that I can inspect at a county outside of this area and pass a safety only to qualify in my county residence ?

If so that's very good news, I just purchased a 99 cobra with an r50 cammer swap that is missing most emissions equipment

Are you a LEO with the woodbridge township police?

It is possible to pass emissions in NJ with no EGR, a friend of mine had his supercharged 03 Marauder tuned with no EGR and he passed fine, that car has since made it through the NYS inspection which is even worse than ours.

That’s what I’m trying to figure out. Does their software see that emission crap is turned off, or do they just look for cats, and check for check engine codes

The machines will show what is ready, not ready, and unsupported. I know catalyst function HAS to show ready, my last tuner tried putting all of my stuff to "unsupported" and the state inspection guys got really confused.

So tuned off = not ready, or if its super turned off it'll say unsupported, but normally it just says not ready. They don't check for check engine codes, I do know some state facilities (the one in Rahway comes to mind, the one I used in South Brunswick IIRC did not have these) have undercarriage cameras to look for cats in the exhaust.

all three. does the car have cats? And what jobsi said, just google NJ collectors car registration and it will take you to the dmv link on how to do this. it's really easy. IF you are a LEO I'm surprised you didn't know about this.

They have the cameras everywhere at state inspection stations now and they do check for engine codes. When I used to daily my car my battery went dead and after I put a new one in, the car failed for not having enough time/information in the ecu as if they know people know that if you throw a code and the check engine light comes on, you disconnect the battery and reconnect to clear it for a short time.

Wassup man, I'm in Colonia. I'm currently trying to get mine inspected in Rahway. It failed earlier this year because I was working on it over the winter and reset ecu. Didn't put enough miles on it. Haven't been back since but I'll be going sometime in next month and I'll let u know if I pass.
