Putting aside the whole "it's the last year, it had the best equipment before the new body style maaannn!" what are the differences between the 96, 97 and 98? What improvements were made over those years? What were the good and bad changes? What were some querks about them, what gave them character, made them unique?
I'm not comparing the 94 and 95 because I'm talking about the DOHC 4.6L.

Pic is of my 98

Headrest where changed
Rims
No clock on dash
No strut tower brace
I believe the headers added a bolt
There a couple of other things but but have to check. I personally don’t think it’s anything that’s makes it better then a 97. Wouldn’t buy a 96. Couple of recalls and upgrades made to it

98 had a different fuel system with no return. In my opinion the 97 is the best of the sn95 body style if you are looking to make improvements in power.

Not entirely true. My 98 was return. Some where return some weren’t. They’re a bastard child fuel system, also the gauge cluster for a 98 only works for a 98. Exhaust hangers were either L shaped or I shaped depending on when it was built. Random shit that people pointed out already.

All 98 Mustangs were return fuel systems. The late 98 cars (First roll out of the 99MY) were returnless. They used a different fuel tank and filler neck with the center mounted pump/basket combo. Easiest and cheapest way to upgrade that fuel system was to go get a tank out of an earlier car along with the filler neck, pump holder etc. and swap them into the car. I did that modification 15 years ago before eventually just pulling it all out and installing all aftermarket parts.
