Im looking to visit Salem, MA for Halloween/end of October. Has anyone ever gone? Any suggestions on what to do? Any must visit places? Places to eat? I’d love to hear some first hand experience and suggestions.

First question is, do you have a family that you’re bringing or going with some friends?

Holy Hell Salem in Halloween is tourist trap Armageddon. Not worth it in my opinion. Go on a weekday in mid October or early November to avoid the insanity.

I was there a couple of years ago in mid October with my wife. It gets too crazy crowded around Halloween. Here are a couple of fun things to do in Salem.

House of the Seven Gables

The House of Seven Gables is New England’s oldest wooden mansion built in 1668 and made famous through the fiction of Nathaniel Hawthorne, author of The Scarlet Letter. It’s a must-visit attraction for book lovers and American Literature fans.

In October, add to the experience with either of two theatrical performances which will run at the House on select days throughout the month – a fantastically exciting way to get in the Halloween spirit.

In Legacy of the Hanging Judge, relive the events of the witch trials as you encounter both the accused and the accusers.

Or, step into the pages of Hawthorne’s Spirits of the Gables, a tale of guilt, greed, and revenge with the characters from The House of the Seven Gables.

SpookyWorld used to be great, until they shut it down when they built Foxborough stadium. Can't count the number of times friggin football has ruined something that I enjoyed...

I think I went to Neewollah's Haunted Forest once or twice. That wasn't bad.

All in all though, Gettysburg PA had the spookiest feel out of all of the places I visited. The ghost tours were excellent, especially if the fog is rolling in, and (at least in 2002), it wasn't overly packed with tourist-trap garbage. Salem was bloated with tourist-trap stuff, like paying $10 to walk in someone's house where they dress up and jump out at you.

I live probably 1.5 hours south but have never been. Have a bunch of friends that have gone and enjoyed it.

We spent a day in Salem last month as we toured the NE. My wife is a huge Halloween fan and loves that Hocus Pocus movie, so of course we had to see anything related to it there. We asked our tour guide how crazy it is during Halloween, and he said that the city population basically doubles during Halloween weekend (which looks to be true) and everything gets really crowded. We ate at Ugly Mug Diner, which was very good. A full day or two there would be plenty to see anything important IMO.
