Rear suspension replacement

My right rear shock took a crap on me and is leaking oil. There are so many choices that I have no idea where to start. A bunch of the options while looking on Summit and American Muscle state that they are for the GT500, but I can't find any reviews from people with these cars; all the reviews are of GT owners.

My car is at stock ride height and will remain that way. I had a lowered car before and it was a disaster. My catless h-pipe hits on some speed bumps as it sits now, so that is not an option to lower it. I daily my car with spirited jaunts on exit ramps, and hit the 1/4 mile once in a while.

If you are only replacing one shock, then stick with stock so the damping will match on both sides. If replacing both, then there are so many good option to the point it doesn't really matter, go with a known brand and what you like.

Even if you replace the blown shock with a factory replacement chances are the other shock is worn out or on its way out so you will not get even dampening behavior. If it was my car I would just replace both shocks at the same time to the dampening is the same left to right. If you just want a good replacement I would get Bilstein 24-122245 or if you like to go tinker with your suspension settings a set of viking shocks are a good choice.

I use to run a set of well known adjustable struts/shocks and after a year of daily driving they bit the dust. Said f*&^ this and went to a set of Bilstein struts/shocks and couldn't be happier, really wish I had gone this route instead first and saved money but live and learn.

I've had the Tokico adjustables on my car for years and love them. Oddly, I just did a search for them and it appears they are no longer carried by anyone.

I have non-adjustable Koni's on mine. I originally had coilovers up front and the car sat so low, and rode like a shopping cart, so I raised it by going with FRPP lowering springs and the Koni's, Car rode MUCH better right out of the gate. I have since replaced upper and low control arms and Panhard bar to BMR adjustable units and the handling is much improved as well. Those Koni's are available on American Muscle.

Thank you all for the replies. I agree with you @merkyworks about replacing both. I found a set of Roush rear shocks on Summit for a little over $200 for the pair. Figured they'd be at least as good as OEM.
