I'll be going through this in the next few months. Cancer in my Dobe. We had the tumors removed and now we are just enjoying the rest of the time we have with her until it spreads further. But we already explained to my 6 year old what's going on. That was one of the saddest things I've ever witnessed. He sobbed as he hugged her, telling her how much he'd miss her. We're lucky enough that we can make these last few months even more special because we know what's coming, but still a horrible situation to be in.

Personally I'd tell the truth. Good luck.

Hey Bryan, your family will also have options on "what to do" with the remains.
We still have the ashes from our two Shelties.

We will be having him cremated, so he will still be around just in a different form. Thanks for the advice everyone, we really appreciate it.

Hey guys and gals, my wife and I have made the tough decision to put her dog down. He is over 13 years old and it just not doing good. The appointment is later on this week, we just don't know how to break this news to the kids. They are young and don't really understand what's going on with him, they just know he is sick. Do you all think we should make up something to tell them or tell them the truth?
Make something up. They’re probably too young to understand, and if you do tell them the truth, it will likely be used against you when they’re teens.... I’m facing the same issue, but kids are grown. It’s painful to think about.

As far as new pets go. I believe it’s different for everyone. As dumb as it sounds Ive adopted a scorpion as my new pet. Hes been my entertainment lately even though he almost stung me a couple times
Just don’t try any Monkey-Frog lovin’ with your new pet.

It’s tough, we have been going back and forth on what to say but I feel the truth is the best. My wife found that book and is going to get it today.

I had to make that decision one day and i still think about that especially when pictures come up on my cell when looking through them. My guy still had the will to live but his body was saying otherwise. He was 9 and my son was too young to remember. Now my other one is 14 in good health but I know the day is coming. My son is 6 so this will be hard for him. We recently adopted a 2 yr old so hopefully that will keep him occupied to not think about it .
Best wishes

I had aways been in the “it’s just a dog camp”, but the older I get, and the older our little dog gets the more I worry about losing her.

I’ve never told someone that after a pet was lost, just my personal belief growing up. But I’m sure I’ll be all messed up when she’s gone. Something about her loyalty and routine that has changed me over the years.

Sorry to hear about your pup.

Worst day of my life was when my Golden had to be put down...took my 9 years before I got another dog...(happened 3 days ago)

My kids are all over him and my wife is too...so far I've avoided him...don't anything to do with it yet.

Yes I'm fragile...im the most non emotional person you will ever meet but when my old dog died I totally shut myself off...messed me all up
