Hey guys and gals, my wife and I have made the tough decision to put her dog down. He is over 13 years old and it just not doing good. The appointment is later on this week, we just don't know how to break this news to the kids. They are young and don't really understand what's going on with him, they just know he is sick. Do you all think we should make up something to tell them or tell them the truth?

That’s rough dude. I dont have kids so I cant say on that end, but its rough losing a family member like that. My folks told us what was happening and left it at that. As an adult I appreciated it.

My best to yall

It's going to be tough on my wife, I think it is best to tell them what we are doing with him because they will start asking where he is at. We kept hoping he would go in his sleep, then we would not have to do this.

Had to do my cat 2yrs ago. He was my fat friend and it was the hardest thing Ive done in a long time.

My buddy had cancer and they gave him 1-4 months with treatment. I said goodbye and he went to sleep.

I have a German Shepherd who had a seizure a couple of months ago, plus the issues with her dog. Fortunately our Vet pinpointed what was going on with her. I just hope the kids understand when we tell them.

That's awful, we had to do that with my parents/my childhood dog. She had a growth on her leg and could barely walk. The vet told them it was cancer and they made the decision to put her to sleep. I was in the office for that, I will never forget the look on her when the injection started.

The kids will be hurt at first, but they’re strong . Do not buy another dog right away. How old are the kids?

I was a mess for a few days and still wish he was here. His was on his stomach and pancreas. The vet said that he had been hiding it from my wife and I until he gave up. His quality of life went to zero and I did what i had to do.

I really do wish yall the best and will keep yall in my thoughts

We are not getting another any time soon, we have our Shepherd and I hope she has plenty of years left in her. They are 4 & 5 years old, I am sure they will move on I just didn't want to hide it from them I just don't know how to put it in words they can comprehend.

It hurts so much to lose anyone, person or pet. But watching them suffer is even worse.

Ever since I lost my shepherd about 20 years ago I haven't gotten another dog. I put so much work and training in with him, just don't have it in me. And I still don't have a big enough backyard to be fair.
I was adopted by a seal point siamese kitty my sister got around 2003 that she couldn't take with her where she moved. Awesome critter... polite, gentle, funny, and quiet. A "dog" cat. He was acting funny before work, and I was going to take him in that evening. Came home found him dead (in rigor) under my bed after work, only about 6 months after losing my mom in '16. Would have much rather watch him peacefully go to sleep than find him frozen in the death sprawl. His pretty blue eyes stuck open and hazed over. I'm still kicking myself for not taking him that morning.

My brother in law had to recently put down his boxer that he and my sister got before they were even married or had kids. He took him out, got him a hamburger before going to the vet. Wish I could have done the same for my shepherd and kitty.

As far as new pets go. I believe it’s different for everyone. As dumb as it sounds Ive adopted a scorpion as my new pet. Hes been my entertainment lately even though he almost stung me a couple times

So sorry to hear this.

Love this book, espcially for you children. Hope it helps.

We may have to get that, I will show it to my wife. Thank you.

I don't know if we could ever not have a dog, they are such good companions, but it is damn difficult when it is time for them to leave this earth.
