So I won a Copart auction for an 01 cobra. I wanted it for drivetrain to power my Cannonball Widebody Fox. After winning the bid it was clear something was a miss. The car had ALL the cobra Powertrain seats and everything except the exterior. I really didn’t care much because I wanted the IRS and 4 cam to put in my Miami Vice Widebody Fox that I plan on running east coast to west in. However I put it up for sale and all people would do it bitch about this and that. The title says 01 cobra and even has 47V in the VIN but has random Mustang gt body parts scattered amongst it as well as the correct V6 hood fir a cobra. So I dug a bit further and says state verified VIN BY STATE OF ILLINOIS on the windshield. Which is on a placard stamped on the door. There are no other Vins ANYWHERE ON THE BODY. Not on the inner fenders ZERO. After seeing the car obviously doesn’t have s factory paint job but is original paint, the car is clearly a body in white. Has anyone else ever run across this?? Car is clearly rust free and there is NO body paint in the car or on major portions of the jams..??

I may be wrong but I thought all "body in whites" did not have a valid vin to register the car, as it would be lacking the engine id, trans id, brake type and restraint type. These are normally the first 8 digits in the vin. Sounds like a cool find maybe. Pics?

Illinois State issued a Cobra vin and title to the car with their own personal tag. There are no factory ford Vins on it anywhere.

I wasn't aware of there being any vins on the cobras other than the one on the driver side window.

I am quite sure that there is no vin matching on the cobras, at least not on the 99-01.
They are essentially a GT with IRS, 4V ....along with a few other things like amber rear tail lights.
And for '01, seats and "cobra" bumper as well as long nose front (99-01) bumper...
There was also a optional grill delete with cobra emblem instead of the pony.
The '99 and '01 had different spoilers; although I don't know whether they were different from the GT of those years.
Which you will make $ on should you part those items out.

The hood was original on the '99...then '01...then the remainder went on the 03-04 V6 much to the anger of the cobra folks. There were so may extras because there was no regular cobras being built in '00, in order to do the infamous HP SNAFU recall on the '99.

Incorrect, a cobra Hardtop is a 47V as denoted by the VIN. V means 32v 4.6 engine that was only available in a cobra. There are Vins stamped in the wings under the aprons and often in various parts of the body. This car has none, just the state issued cobra tag.

ok...the most I have been able to find out for the 99-04 is a rumor of a vin under the passenger side carpet area.

my dash is out..fender liners removed...steering column..etc..

however..I have recently pulled my soundproofing Ratswool crap off the floor and inner firewall and lined my it with several layers of dynomat-like sticky matting...so I am not anxous to start pulling that shit up to see whether the rumor is true or not.

But I am curious to find out for sure.

Edit: Apparently the Saleen and Roush had vins added to it in several places, but those aftermarket.

So a Miami Vice car gets molested and an '01 cobra gets raped.....

Another '01 cobra bites the dust for no good damn reason....RIP.

I know the 93 Cobras had VIN stickers on all the panels. That's how a buddy discovered one of the panels had been replaced on his and it wasn't reported. I think on the 03/04's it has some kind of Terminator sticker on some of them. I haven't gone digging on mine to see how true it is. But then mine has had work.

I had my 01 interior stripped to install a complete new audio system and never noticed any VIN stamps in the carpeted areas.
On the 93's it wasn't inside. It was in the fenders and bumpers. I think the quarter panel had then too.

If I remember right (its been a while since I worked at ford) none of the new edge cars going forward have any vin stamping anymore. The vin tag is stamped, but it is riveted to the dash core support. Only thing I don't remember if the engine bay it tag is still present, but it would have been riveted to the uni-body frame.

I see your "incorrect" and raise you..
Enjoy your destruction of a perfectly good '01 Cobra.

Not sure why it’s exactly any of your business what I do with my build, if you don’t like it keep scrolling and not trolling. Secondly all you have to do is a generic search to know the 47V is a Hardtop 32v cobra, as no other mustang was available with a 32v that year. If you’re too stupid to do that, you shouldn’t be commenting. I’ve stripped and built many cars over the years and even my 01 SVT focus had Vins stamped under the deadener over the tunnel and in the cowl. The wing ears on the inner fenders had stamps as well as vin stickers on all the removable body panels. Clearly the car was legitimately tagged by the ILLINOIS STATE POLICE. Therefore clearly there was no monkey business. There’s no door tags or Vins on ANY of the body parts. That doesn’t happen by accident and if there was any funny business, I’m sure Illinois state would’ve addressed it. I’m guessing most here are commenting by opinion and not experience. I thought at least one person here might actually chime in that has experience with the body in whites. By the way it wasn’t a perfectly good car if it has a state assigned vin....... I can see you bashing it now in a for sale ad....

I think anyone should do what they want with their cars without getting static. I dont know about the vins or white cobras but going by your small photo--it doesnt look like it has the 01 Cobra tailights, the cobras have amber lenses across the bottom.
Actually I wouldnt mind if alot more of the 01 cobras are distroyed because that would help to make mine more rare and maybe worth more ( im not being sarcastic)

Only out of curiosity----I dont get why the vin thing matters because you are piecing out the car anyway. So that is not a photo of a cobra or your cobra that you are talking about? because if its a cobra it doesnt have the cobra taillights? And if in the photo that is not a cobra then it makes sense that one it is white.
