I’ve got a couple lights on my dash. An ABS light & TC. Are there any good “universal” code readers out there for around $100? If not, which one do you use?

Yeah I know I can bring it to most shops to get it read for free. I still want one for myself.

I use the BAFX reader from Amazon and paid for the Torque App and live monitoring plugins. FYI, not all of those readers are iPhone compatible.

***EDIT*** For fords, not universal. Sorry for the confusion.

FORscan.org

Free and nearly as good as most paid applications.

Get a DLC2 to USB that they recommend and you're G2G

My wife has a Toyota. I should have included that it needs to be universal. I’ll update the Op.

I have had good luck with the bafx bluetooth obd2 connection with the torque phone app.

I use it on the wifey's G35 as well.

It is at least a start to getting codes and torque has other add ons as well.

I use a Snap-on Zeus for pre-owned vehicle appraisals. If we are bidding multiple vehicles on trade we use a back up Performance Tool W2977. Both above your budget....but you get what you pay for. These devices are banned at the auction because the cheap ones used by inexperienced dealers can brick a ECU and will get you thrown out. Hope this helps.

Reading comprehension must not be your bag. I stated both were above your budget. The title says recommendations. I told you what I use and recommend. I also gave you a cautionary tale of what happens when you try to use cheap Chinese readers that interface with the most critical component of the vehicle and can read, edit, brick and cause damage. You’re welcome and hell yeah it’s big.

Uh...wat? Above his budget is an understatement. I would argue it is you with a reading comprehension issue.

Yes, but not cheap Chinese. May be cheap quality at times but is not cheap to purchase.

I agree that it’s ridiculous if anyone believes I was recommending OP spend 9k plus. I was saying that’s what I use professionally daily, not saying that he should drop that coin. I also recommended a value scanner that I have had success with that was within a reasonable amount and is affordable.

OP edited his original post. Ya’ll can win the Internet for the day and spin it...I’m just trying to provide some perspective and be helpful.

All I’m saying is that yes technology and variety of code read/write devices that are affordable are out there. I’m just advocating that hooking anything into a obd can have serious consequences and it may not be on your best interest to buy the least expensive mass produced option.

Just messin. Actually ened up getting rid of all my snap-on scanners/readers. Waste of money and drain your wallet. Plenty of rep. Scanners dont have to pay updates, also CD programs for laptop at 1/8 the price and do much more. Far as "cheapo" reader, Bosch I picked up at autozone has been pretty good. Tackled ever car euro to domestic, if just trying to get codes/clear. Like 60 bucks and free software/updates.

I just looked up the Performance Tool W2977...it’s like $30. How was that outside of his budget? I just assumed it was because you said so. Either way my bad.
