I've been talking to Tom Shepard and Tony Sorentino and we are coordinating a Cobra R/Ford Performance road racing car reunion at VIR Raceway in April of 2020. Amazingly enough it will be the 25th anniversary of the 95R, 20th anniversary of the 00R, 15th Anniversay of the FR500C and 10th anniversary of the Boss 302R. How time flies!!!!

There will be open track, parade laps and a car show and I'm hoping we can get a few guest speakers from Ford as well as some of the figure who made these cars such a success on track. We'd also like to coordinate some on track pictures of the various groups of cars along with a total Cobra R picture. We are planning on making this a very special event for all of the participants and we are committed to making it a great experience!

We are still in the early phases of planning but would like to get a feel for who would be interested and what they would be interested in.

I’m interested, but would not commit until closer to the date to ensure weather cooperates.

Will this be a specific event for the R’s, Mustangs, Fords or is it a free for all depending on the club you are in?

If it’s a free for all I’ll likely just do a show and parade laps (maybe a hyperdrive if offered).

It would be great to have an event for us and not see a bunch of other cars on the track.

1200 miles away... not happening for me. I would like to have seen something more centrally located in the U.S. making it an easier drive for more people versus near the east coast. Have fun!

My yes is more of a probably. Unfortunately i need to get a little closer to April before i can be sure. Also, i voted “car show and parade laps only” but would really like to be able to do car show and open track if possible. Looking forward to more info. Thanks

I’ll do open track with mine. All mustangs should be able to attend. And maybe extra track time for R only sessions.

I would do my best to make it, but I sure wouldn't pull that far and not get to hit the track.

Would be interested a track day and the show if it could be more centralized in the United States.
I'm pretty sure Heartland Park in Kansas has just repaved their track.
Eagle Canyon in Texas is in the process of repaving their track this year will be open late 2019.
Maybe with this many models having a milestone birthdays there could be multiple shows/ track events.
would be willing to help in any way if we can get one more centralized in the United States.

THIS! I know the east coasters would love to have it in Virginia, but you’d get more particispation if you didn’t have it near a coastline. You would get more surrounding states participating. Somewhere in the middle of the U.S. is better for the masses.

To answer some of the questions:

All Cobra R's are invited for sure!

Reason for VIR is that's it's a relatively safe, destination track that has room to let us do multiple things at the same time.

It would be in conjunction with the SCMC event. Unfortunately we can't get enough cars (110+) to make it a stand alone event.

What about having a car show after 5pm on Saturday for just a couple hours and incorporate a BBQ into it? That was you could do the open track during the day and we could all still participate in the car show?

I like the car show and BBQ idea

Can we get track time just to ourselves? Maybe a few sessions in the day?

I have raced the original track. I say this since VIR expanded the payment to make an optional longer track. The 'original course' is the 3.27 mile track.

Nonetheless, the track is fun in any configuration. The Nascar teams test here for Sonoma and Watkins Glen. I am sure that I can attend. [Hint] make reservations early.

Here is my 1965 Mustang coming down the corskscrew at VIR (~2004):

Mark,

Thanks for putting this together with Tony.

Putting an event like this on is more involved than many people consider. There aren't enough of us to do a stand-alone event. Mark and I discussed it and if we get 50 cars total we will be ecstatic. The concentration of Rs is heavy on the East Coast. MCA and other events are always better attended on the East Coast--this has been proven repeatedly at prior events.

The need to join with another event is a paramount. We can attend their event and add to it. They take care of the insurance and logistics of the event and workers. We show up and burn up tires and brake pads. Joining SCMC is a natural fit in a world-class facility and allows us to enjoy the weekend with other SVT products. The other option would be an MCA event but they don't have many driving/show events.

Guys, I am coming from S. Texas. It will be 3 days drive to get there for me. However, I know this will be an epic weekend. Fantastic facility and a great group of Rs. I am confident we will have more Rs here than any event to date. And that includes the 45th MCA Anniversary at Barber Motorsport Park in 2009, the last time we had an R Reunion.

As soon as Tony gets the dates confirmed he will let Mark know so we can get a solid date to plan around. Dave, I sure hope it isn't Easter weekend but Tony won't have a choice. Most tracks tell you the weekend they have available and it is take it or leave it.

I am definitely doing all the track time I can get but I would like some sort of a show. An evening get-together sounds like a good idea.

I am confident we could also get some sort of a parade lap scenario created to allow those that don't track their cars to at least get a few fun laps around the course.

I look forward to seeing everyone at this event!

Tom

If people want a track in the middle of the country how about Indy? Plenty of room and a world class track. One big issue though is the 500 coming up in May. Maybe after the 500. Tom mentioned Barber is another location. VIR is a great track yet on one side of the country. I was at the 10year in 2010 at VIR. I even got one of the jackets. We did have one session for the Rs.
I have another car in the works for track however the R will make this event if it happens.

Maybe if you made it a R and terminator meet you'd get more people. lol

Good luck, if it was more centralized I'd love to come check out all the R's.

If we want to move it more center US, Heartland Park would be a great option. I can get it worked out so it wouldn't cost a fortune to run.

EDIT: I would request a pass to run my Viper with you guys though haha

Any of these “middle of America” tracks would be better for the masses versus a coastal track. More people can get to it with a 1 or 2 day drive. I have been on Road America. It was a blast!

Also, I have a Terminator as well, but I’d recommend keeping the gathering for just the R cars, and of course the @13COBRA Viper! ;)

If you limit it to just Rs you may not get enough cars. While I was at Charlotte several people came up to me and ask if it was a real R and then couldn’t believe I was tracking my R. I’m not sure how many of us track our cars still so we may not get a lot of cars for track.
However another world class track is COTA.
