mustang gt will have higher insurance and require more gas filling.

OP, tell your son to suck it up. I'm sure you didnt complain to your parents that your car didnt have enough power.. or did you??? LOL

the v6 gets like 3mpg better than the coyote. Whoopty doo, he will be saving a whopping 2 cents per mile or 3 bucks at every fill up. Every little bit counts i guess LOL

Friend of mine has a 3.7 s197, he did longtubes, ported intake manifold and a 93 oct tune.

Sounds like a lambo

Doing something along these lines will help. I agree with others that it's probably not worth dumping a lot of money into (other than intake, tubes/exhaust, basic higher octane tune is all). Any mods that you can buy used and then later take off and sell separate from the car, if wanted, might be a good idea. All considering that, as the OP said, getting a different car isn't an option. My neighbor has a lightly-modified V6 and a newer 5.0; his V6 sounds pretty good.

If emissions doesn't matter then long tubes paired with used Steeda intake, ported upper/lower intake, BMR LCA's and MPT 93 tune the car will sit at 300+ to the wheels and will turn mid-high 12's all day for $1500 or less invested.

Sure it's no 5.0 but they run pretty good for what it is.

Yes, if you’ve served you would know, enlisted is shit pay.
Every bit helps. At least his dad bought him a car.

Mpg on coyote is lower than what’s advertised. I daily’d Mine for 3 years and got 15mpg 90% of the time.

This kid won’t have a commute since his work is next to the barracks.

Gears wake Cyclone’s up, then longtubes and mid pipe, and good tune. Focus on suspension next.

You dont have to serve to know....
Btw, you must have served in the wrong branch....
My daughter is in Air Force and with housing allowance her take home check is only a few hundred less than mine and I make over $80k a year.

Keep in mind if he did decide to do the swap, it would be a way to keep the car titled and insured as a v6, which I'm sure adds up with a 17-18 year old.

Not all of us can have a cush job in the military. OP's son is an E2 or E3, no housing allowance unless you're married. Are you comparing your daughters pay (who knows what rank) to an E2/E3? LOL

@ArabianOak, according the malern we served in the wrong branch bro. We shoulda been an armchair qb in the chairforce.

That Mustang is bananas and so much fun to watch run! There were 3 people in that car. the driver, the camera guy and the friend with the nitrous switch , lmao!

@ArabianOak if your son is serious, a turbo setup like on that 3.7 could make it a killer sleeper car. Yes, a Coyote is more fun and can make stupid power. But if your kid is up for a project, a turbo kit could make it a cash making grudge racer.

Gears, turbo kit, a good tune from Lund, or Livernois and patience.

3.7's are capable of hitting 31 highway, the best I've ever got is 25 highway driving 10 over the speed limit on consistent roads. I also get 16 around town which I am sure a 3.7 doesn't unless you're flooring it everywhere.

highest I've ever seen people report for 3.31 geared 5.0's is about 28, and again, that's with some effort.

I actually hit 29 mpg average driving from San Diego to Las Vegas in my 2014 GT once. Had the the 301A package with some sweeeetttt (for gas mileage) 3.31s. Even still, I was impressed for being a V8. The VCT technology is pretty good when stock.

Not to derail this thread, sometimes the easiest choice isn’t always the right choice.
I can look up e4 pay, her making nearly 80k as an e4 sounds like bs.
Allow me to help because my bullshit detector went off.

E-4 Basic Pay Rate - Enlisted Military Payscales

$2088-$2535 per MONTH depending on time in service across ALL branches of military. If said daughter is knocking home nearly $80k she better be married and stationed in silicon valley for a $50k per year housing stipend....

Wow, I didn’t realize those were in the 13s with no/minimal effort. That’s not bad at all...he should be able to have plenty of fun, stay safe, and still learn the ropes. I would not trust myself at 18 years old with anything sub 13 seconds. I was getting in trouble with cars that were much, much slower.

thanks for all the replies gang...

yes, he is an e-2 soon to be e-3 living in the barracks at camp Lejeune. Not making much money at all...around 750 every 2 weeks. between his car payment and insurance he is right at 500 a month and he has no tickets. Crazy. haha.

we will be going with the tune/headers and intake manifold option. he watched a bunch of videos of guys running in the 12's with that setup and got very excited. he also thought it sounded great. we will keep stock parts and once he sells the car he will revert back to stock since it is an MCA edition car.

Nice.

I would just say I used to throw money at my truck back when I was balling on a budget in my early 20's. Wanted to blow the money cause I thought it would be cool to go faster. Hindsight, I wasted money when I could of used it for better things before I started making better money.
