Thinking about life as you get older?

To the people that are actually going to read and respond today, I told my boss to go **** himself after 2.5 years at a company I work for and having 4 bosses within that time frame.

Previous to my past I worked for a company for over 13+ years, did great but was acquired and asked to move which I couldn't do being that I take care of my grandmother with stage 2 breast cancer and my parents because my stepfather shakes with a hammer in his hand.

I finally hit my breaking point when I was asked to work another double shift for the 20th time (international company) on the 2nd and 3rd shift without a day off aside for the 4th and I threw a shit fit and said no. The Compensation is no longer worth, I have saved 9 months to hold out but do you think I made the right decision?

I talked to an internal friend's company who I did 5 interviews for but got denied because of the exception of pay, did I make the right decision or butt **** myself?

Nobody can tell you if you made the right decision. Only you know your circumstances well enough to answer that. In today's world, I'd be hesitant to leave a steady job. But, that's easy for me to say since I've been with my employer for 18 years, now.

In the end, you made a choice, and stated your reason that the compensation is no longer worth it. Seems to me, if you really feel that way in your heart, that's all the reason you need. Move on to better things.

I once read a quote that said roughly "on your deathbed you won't be asking for more money, only more time." So is working 70 hours a week worth it? Plenty of folks have said it paid the bills, but their kids went from being born to graduating college without any memories. They couldn't be there for football games, cheerleading, homework, etc.


....so yeah, there's a life/work balance beyond the millennials who think 20 hours a week should net them 100K.

You made the right decision. Some companies have zero ****s to give about riding an employee right into complete burnout. Take a week to collect yourself and then start looking. The good news is that everyone and their mother are looking for good people.

Did you quit or just tell him to **** off and weren’t working the OT?

I get it. Did the same thing 5 years ago. Ill never punch a time clock again. All that matters is what you think and feel.

Quality of life is greater than any paycheck for me.

I wish I had taken more time off. My oldest daughter is starting HS, man it’s over before you know it. Still feels like yesterday that she was a little baby. Our youngest is 8 and I’m trying to savor the moment, still feel like I have spent too much time at work.

Well if you’re asking strangers on the internet after the fact, you probably ****ed yourself.

Hopefully whatever skills you bring to the table are in demand in your local job market. Good luck in the job hunt. I’ve heard from younger guys that it’s all about social media and networking via those resources. Sounds like things have changed a ton in the last ten years.

Seriously though, any member of SVTP can make all the money they need, at any point, from their personal business they run themselves. Sounds like from your post that you might like being your own boss? Maybe now is the time to give that idea a shot? Whatever you do, just remember that girl dancing on stage doesn’t actually love you.

It’s sad when guys work through their kids lives. Speaking in generalities; see it all the time at work. Guys can’t help but put in for OT. Meanwhile, their babies quickly became kids and teenagers. And guess what, things are not all good at home. Big surprise. Kids don’t need rich parents. They need parents who are around. I wouldn’t go the same job every day if it made me miserable. “Ain’t nobody got time for that!?!”

My wife and I decided quickly that we wanted a family oriented life. Not one driven by having the latest this or that. **** keeping up with the Jones. That Jones family are a bunch of assholes anyway.

I feel that I am fortunate now to be able to do a lot of remote work, flexible schedule. I’m very protective of my time as well. After all, it’s over before you know it.

Better to have hope in finding a job you’ll like than being miserable in one you don’t

OP, go with your gut man. If you feel you did the right thing, then you did.

I keep pondering the idea of finding another job. Besides some of the politics I like what I do but want to make more money, but the main reason being I work 2nd shift. My youngest starts 1st grade this fall. My oldest who has special needs will be in 5th grade. I’ve been on 2nd since 2013 only did it for more money.

I worked for corporations. The last 20, a family owned business. Been highs and lows, but I have done very well here.

Im a bit in a similar situation sort of.

Ive been working for the same company now since 2008. I have been offered $20/hr more at many other companies. I am seriously considering jumping ship. However, where Im at now I can go weeks and sometimes even months at a time without having to go in since I have several other business ventures that occupy the majority of my time. Im hesitant to leave because of where Im at with it but its stupid for me to stay.

You can always make more money, but you can't make more time...

I do 40 a week and dont give a shit how short staffed we are when I'm not supposed to be there. I may a work a day of OT every other month because I have call days

Worked for the man for a long time. Started my own business last year. Work 2x as hard for 4x the reward. 2x of that is personal and 2x of that is $$. Best part is I treat my employees the way I wish I had been treated when I was an employee. Big companies lose sight of their most important assets (employees).
