My wife and I were headed to our hometown from Charleston, SC to FT. Walton Beach, Fl. on the 3rd. On 1-10 around Tallahassee a car hydroplaned off into a ditch and struck a tree. We didn't see it but came up on it first. I told my wife to call 911 and to stay put. About the time I got out and started heading towards the SUV another guy had stopped and was running with me. The car was on its driver side. Tree had mangled the car on impact and killed the driver. We couldn't even see or get to him to help. The lady in the car appeared to be ok but was in shock of course and hanging from her seat belt. I checked on my wife's phone call and told her to call them back again to make sure people were on their way. By now 10 guys were there and honestly we couldn't do anything. Nothing worse than feeling helpless. The scene was safe from fire or exploding and flipping the car at this point could only hurt her. They had to use the jaws to get her out and asked us to leave I assume due to the body. It would be a lie to say I was not more concerned about wet roads after that. Happy Fourth of July...right? :/

Hate to hear that.

We can all be gone in a blink of an eye.

All the above. I worry more each day about the other guy not paying attention or losing control...and taking my life or the lives of my loved ones.

OP - glad you weren’t harmed, but obviously the memory of this won’t ever leave you.

I lost a teammate and his girlfriend over a Christmas when he fell asleep at the wheel and they careened off a cliff. Driving is dangerous and comes with risks and not enough people take is seriously IMO. I'm sorry you had to go through that, seeing death is a miserable experience I don't wish on anybody.

I am a very aggressive driver (I am trying to change and improve upon that). With that said, I turn into a total pussy when the roads get wet.

I don’t **** around in bad weather.

I'm the same exact way

I saw a fatal accident this weekend also. drunk 23yr old killed a 17yr old girl and his 28yr old gf. Makes you sick to think how life can be taken in an instant.

For whatever reason when it rains i drive faster. Something i definitely need to change. Also another reason its so important to have good tires with good tread.

Lost my squad leader along with his wife and two dogs when they struck a pole on I5 right after leaving a BBQ with the squad. Truck hit the pole and as a passerby was running to them hearing him yell for help his Silverado exploded just like in the movies.

Shane, you took action and were ready to help if possible. Take solace in that.

God bless your Squad Leader, his wife, and dogs. Thank you both for your service.

makes for a rough trip, sorry to hear it but glad to see so many tried to help.

I was gonna try to squeeze one more road trip outta the tires on my truck, maybe I'll go ahead and replace em...

Sorry to hear. Dealing with car accidents can be a brutal experience, a large majority of people do not take driving in bad weather conditions serious enough.

Thanks, everyone. I'm fine....I'm alive. Hard to think about myself when so many lost a loved one. Even when I twisted my ankle and ended up face down in the mud at one point, lol. It's amazing what you can do, when you have no other option. Sorry to hear the other stories out there. I think we all think we are invincible which is farthest from the truth.
