The only crazy mark ups I've seen down here from personal experience is Raptors.

"Regular" vehicles I know from talking to salesmen that I know and trust tell me they add 3-3.5k on top of trade in at most depending on the price of the car. Leaves them some wiggle room, but of course down here almost every dealer had a $500-800 dollar dealer fee.

With a trade in it could become more complicated in that they may drop the price of their car but "lowball" you on trade. Get a good idea from Carmax and other instant buy dealers to see what type of trade in to expect or shoot for. I've noticed recently I've gotten better trade in numbers from regular dealers than carmax, and the selling price seemed fair to me.

Had a dealer years ago say he was willing to drop the price on a car because it been on the lot "too long", I asked how long was that, and he said 3 weeks...

I'd go in low balling on the Jeep that is local, worst they can say is no.

I've been looking at leftover Jeep Trackhawks lately. Found one in Kansas where the dealer is offering it for 17 percent under MSRP. Reached out and got a trade value on my current Grand Cherokee which was about a 2k over allowance so essentially almost 20 percent off. The closest dealer in Colorado is 13 percent off sticker and when I asked if he could match the Kansas dealer he laughed and said they are losing about 10k on that deal. Decided to pass since I'm not ready to give up my Hellcat but it was tempting.

As someone else mentioned: know what you want to spend out the door with the new car. As a heads-up, there is no way you are getting $12k for the cobra. average auction price for an '01 cobra is roughly half of that--not to bust your balls, but just want you to know the realistic numbers.

The dealer is going to know what they need out of the Jeep. They are either going to discount the jeep or they are going to discount your trade-in. The good news is Jeep Grand Cherokees absolutely tank in value--that's why I ended up with a used grand cherokee.
