Thinking about selling

It seems like I go through phases where I contemplate selling the car and ultimately end up not going through with it. Recently though as my kids are getting older and are beginning to have more interest in the hobby I have been debating it more. I have 3 kids, ages 8, 6, and 6. So all three riding in the Cobra is out of the question, so it doesn’t get much use.

I have always wanted a 1970 Chevelle and I know that car is well big enough to hold my family and still has the wow factor I like. They are not nearly as rare as a 03-04 Cobras if you look at eBay, classifieds and production numbers. Although finding one complete is another story.

Right now I can only be a single hobby car family but since the Cobra is paid for I could probably add to the collection in 3-4 years after we buy our retirement home.

After that mindless rambling my question for you all is have you been in similar situations? Were your bored with the car only to sell and regret? Did you just weather the storm and stay out with your car?

Seems to me watching the forum for a long time now.....for those that have asked this same question....if they do sell, many come back and say they regret it. Then they'll go on to say they really want back in, but prices are higher and selection of clean cars is much lower. "Should have never sold the one I had......"

But that doesn't mean there aren't people that move on to other vehicles and are perfectly content. This forum is mainly comprised of die hards, so you have to keep that in mind.

When you drive it and it no longer brings a smile to your face then you know it's time to let go.

As we get older and hobby time decreases to make way for more family time it's natural to let go of things that once meant the world to you.

I've thought about it many times but it still brings that ear to ear grin to my face so I'm gonna keep it and hope my boys turn into car guys. Then, hopefully, I'll have the best of both worlds.

Yep. First thought about selling my 03 Cobra in 2015. Finally sold it in 2018, and bought an RS5. I never really drove the Cobra... Sticky tires couldn't hook up in the rain so I only drove it on the nicest of days. Bought some rain friendly tires and they wouldn't hook at all ever.

You'll know it when the time is right. I miss the Cobra a little, but not enough to regret the decision.

It seems like I go through phases

We all do. Sometimes hourly.
The car scene around here is big. I sold my '04 for a 2012 Shelby. I sold the Shelby a year later and took a break from all things mustang and felt a "reset" was in order.

I struggled with not being able to participate in shows or gatherings.
If spectating and showing pics of your old car to people is your thing, than you will be fine.
I wasn't

As we get older and hobby time decreases....

:DI'm getting older and doing just fine. Kids turn 18 eventually.

As said above, I think we all go through phases. I get bored with cars very quickly. The thing I keep finding is I come back to mustangs. If you sell it you will regret it. Just like when you purchase a new vehicle, you regret it eventually but you know yourself better than us. I know that when I sell a car, months down the road I will want another one.

None of that probably helped but there it is. lol

its only get get harder to find another terminator in good shape your confident in later. If I'd known what the Lightning market would do I never would have traded mine.

Also like the other thread in here about buying an old muscle car, really look into that whole deal. My uncle won a nice Chevelle SS clone for like $10 at a raffle, dumped a buncha money in it and was never with happy with it vs a modern performance car. Too much money spent for the results but depends on what you want out of it

I had a convertible and sold it last year. I took less than what it was really worth just to get it out of my hair quickly. I immediately regretted it. I toyed with selling it in the last and then changed my mind but this time, I really stuck with it. I even tried to remove myself from FB forums and SVTPerf and I still wanted the car. Now, the problem was that I would have paid significantly more for the same car.

Luckily, I saw this car for sale and immediately snatched it up. Now, do I have times I want to sell it....yeah, I have tons of those times, but like everyone else said, I just take it out for a drive or just sit in the garage and look at it and I change my mind. Also, now the prices of these cars just shot up....I don't know what happened to Terminators in 2019, but they really shot up in price. I know if I sell this one, I won't get it back for cheap.

Thanks everyone for your perspective. I know if I sell the Cobra, I’ll lose my ass with what I have in it (You never break even) and I would have to either borrow money for a turnkey classic or have a significant project. Seems like the smart thing would be to hold onto this and add to the collection. (Cruiser and Cobra).

If the Cobra could seat 3 in the back I don’t even think this would be a question but it’s a different breed of car.

I went from a 72' Chevelle to the Terminator. I had only one kid so not really in the same boat. A Chevelle is up there on the cool scale and is great for a leisurely cruise and car shows but it is not a drivers car.

The Chevelle was designed 50 years ago. Usually drums all around, discs up front if you are lucky, carburetor, points, coil spring & trailing arm suspension, flat wide seats, etc. No power seats, probably no A/C, cruise or P/W. Maybe P/B & P/S. The ride is not smooth by today's standards, leans in the corners and dives on hard braking. And slow by today's standards (14's in the 1/4 mile). Drive or ride in a few muscle cars before you make your decision.

I have a 69 mach 1 428 car, engine makes a hair over 400 flywheel hp, has a tko600, cruise control, ac, modern stereo. Its an absolute bore to drive compared to the cobra and if it wasn't my old high school car id sell it for something else.

Ive dumped a ton of money into it to make it drive like the terminator but it doesn't cut it. Ultimately its only good for impressing people. It would get smoked at every stop light by most cars on the street and can never provide the terminator enjoyment factor.

Just do whatever makes you happy.

Considering a Z06 or new ZR1 but I doubt the drive will be the same.

From what ive read about the Terminator, a c5z06 is very similar. We bought a 2002 405hp z06 brand new and ill never forget what it was like driving that car.

Raw, extremely powerful, seemingly out of control at the limit. Always ready to kill you if you werent paying 100% attention.

I'll have another c5z some day now that they are so damn cheap.

You are somewhat bored with your current girlfriend and have been eyeing another. If you kick her to the curb, you’ll enjoy the new one for a bit and then long for the old one. Give it time and when the money and space allows, become a Mormon.

Kids aren't young forever. Granted I only have two so there was never an issue as far as family trips. But they grow up and start doing more on their own. The Cobra will still be there. I'm sure you still find time to yourself that you can take the car for a spin. For awhile for me it was just driving it to the store.

I say throw a cover on it for a bit and leave it alone. If its paid off it's not really costing you anything to sit there. If you don't miss it then let it go. If you find yourself thinking about it don't get rid of it yet.

So my situation is the exact opposite, but you may finds some of it helpful. I have been lurking here a bit, but not posted up until now

I have toyed for years with selling my 65 shelby gt350 clone I have had since high school (almost 20 years now). I have 2 daughters, but getting two car seats in that old car's back seat is cramped. I also work a lot of car crashes and recently handled the reconstruction of a 1955 Chevy vs a parked car. The passenger perished in the crash that we normally walk away from every day in a modern car. This made me start to rethink if I really wanted my girls in that old car when someone rear ended me, etc.

I am on my third engine combo and it is not even close to a modern cars. I could put 20,000 in the car and it still would not be near modern cars in my opinion. I recently realized my car would sell for more than I could by a GT500 for.
I now have a real GT500 in the garage and the 65 clone is for sale.

I'm over old cars, I just want to drive it and save my time for other stuff. Depending on your state, it is perfectly legal to put your oldest child in the front seat with the proper booster/child restraint. Just another view.

All depends what you want. I’m selling my cobra. I will miss it and I know I will regret the decision. But, there are other things in life I want(a house and a truck). Also other cars I want to own. So it’s gotta go.
