My name is Fred and I’m building a new car for my race from NYC to LA. I have a donor car but I’d like to have the motor gone through for reliability. It’s an 01 cobra 4 cam. Who are some shops you’d recommend or an exchange program. Preferably east of the Mississippi. I travel and can take the engine pretty much to any reputable shop with reasonable turnover. I’m from Maine but travel south to Georgia at least once per month. I’d also buy a crate motor as well but needs to be 01 compatible. Thanks. 207-664-8699

If it's only street racing, do a 5.4 4v swap. You'll want the extra torque for low speed acceleration without the complexity of a supercharged build
It's also relatively plug and play if navigator based

I’m looking at naturally aspirated as I want to avoid potential heat soak running for 30-35hrs straight. I want reliability. The Powertrain is in my 79 Fox widebody built specifically for the race with a high cowl hood so I’m not sure how a 5.4 would work. Can you guys hit me with a webpage or phone number. I’m sure there’s a 100 L&Ms out there. It’s not so much money as it is reliability and efficiency

L&M Engines

As others have mentioned, John Mihovetz and his company at Accufab Racing are hands down THE masters of the 4v Cobra engines. IF you want the best, there is no one better than Accufab Racing.

Accufab, Inc.

They are located in California, but the engine you will receive back from them will be nothing short of the best.

The guy has taken stock Cobra heads, Block and crank and made 2000+ hp at 10,000 rpm. An N/A road race 4.6 Cobra engine prepared by Accufab should be darn near bulletproof.

Thanks guys, was hoping possibly for eastcoast stuff, but if you want good work sometimes you have to travel. My name is Fred Ashmore, you can find pics on my Facebook. The race is pre 1980 cars so I’ve chosen a Widebody Fox I found that was in the TV series Miami Vice and later drag raced at Orlando Speed Workd by Stuart Dutton. Or you can text me for pics...

Couple of brothers running a shop just NE of Houston and they're pretty much some of the most respected engine builders in the South. You wouldn't know it going to their shop. Literally looks like some back woods machine shop.

Although I assemble my engines myself, I send all parts to them for machine work and they know them all. Domestic and foreign. The guys do great work and a lot of other builders in Houston use then for their machine work.

Since it’s a cannonball run, which the majority of posters seemed to have missed, I would go with a built long block set up for n/a since this is really an endurance race. Ford used to sell a 4.6 4v alluminator long block for n/a applications. There may be some still out there or get a built long block from a reputable shop like listed above and have someone drop it in. You could make reliable 300+ rwhp n/a and it will hold up for the 30+ hours driving cross country.

The ‘01 should have a chance of having the last of the best block you can build a 4.6 from—a Teskid block.
Unless you’re fully committed to the ‘01 Cobra motor or that the car is already 4V swapped, I think you’ll be reliability and money ahead with a Coyote swap. Power by the Hour in Florida has everything you need for the swap and a Gen 2 ‘15-17 Coyote will handle 800hp stock.
Look forward to seeing this project, good luck!

So I looked into an aluminator and pretty much all the stuff I already have would turn into swapmeet parts. I’m not really looking at big power options as there has to be a certain amount of efficiency to make the run viable. One person mentioned a 5.4 swap, but I’m also trying to keep this thing light too. Not just light but simple. Other than a body swap I’d like to keep the car repairable on the go and I’ve found in the past over-Frankenstein’n Cars like this gives you potential major headaches in the road: 320-375 HP should get the job done in efficient manner. Hoping maybe to get the original motor done w the aluminum block or perhaps a Mach I or cobra longblock assembly. I’m researching the builders as of right now.

Stick to the 4.6. Fuel Economy matters and a 5.4 just complicates things. Make sure you run an extra quart over the standard fill so you don't spin a bearing.

I would look into a coyote swap instead of building the 4.6. More power n.a. stock then what you can get reliably out of n.a. 4.6.

Yeah this really isn't a bad idea. The swap isn't new anymore, a gen 1 will be plenty strong and they're getting cheaper by the day.
