Your mom
Seeing how I spend a large portion of my time working in the Caribbean, it doesn't scare me in the least.

As someone pointed out, six million US citizens visit the Dominican every year. Your odds of dying from tainted booze while there is pretty minuscule.

St. Croix is a US territory and it's a third world poophole. But people who ride the cruise ship in and spend the day or those that visit for a week on vacation there get blindsided by the "quaintness" of the two blocks they walk around and don't realize, in the end, it's an armpit.

So, A little over $600 to change flights. Funny part? I would be changing my flight to EXACTLY what the first leg of my current flight is now.
Has anyone ever just got off the plane at the first stop? I can do it with just carry ons.
Or when I get to the airport tell them I will be getting off iat the first layover and not continuing to Punta Cana and see if they can tag my luggage for such?
Even my return flight just drops what would be the first leg of the home trip.

So you have roundtrip LA to NYC with a stop in Vegas. If you get off at Vegas, you're on your own to fly back to LA.

Been to Punta Cana twice, never had a problem.

However, the sargassum (seaweed) is an issue. They have been pummeled for years with this stuff and unless you like weeds next to you while your swimming, you will be at the pool.

Just got back from Nassau (Baha Mar) and it is GREAT. VERY American food, great beach and water. (more expensive though)

I'd go to Punta Cana too, like I said except for seaweed we had zero issues.

Friend of mine went to DR last week. Said she had a blast.

Personally when traveling out of US I only drink from sealed bottles/cans. Wouldn’t be doing mixed drinks

Or maybe they're all too sick to file their reports.

Well a cruise ship, 50 people sick, that easily gets noticed, and reported. As I said earlier, this discussion got brought up on reddit about a week ago. There were countless folks who said they went to the DR for several days and felt like shit about 2-3, with extreme flu like symptoms. These were all in the last 2 months or so. None of these folks ran to the media because it was before the media picked up on this. They just assumed they caught some nasty bug and that was that. I think at least one person said they both got sick and returned home like 2-3 days early and continued feeling like shit once back home for at least a week after.

After stuff I have witnessed with my own two eyes, I would not trust a finding from any government agency.

Things tend to fit a narrative supported by money and politics.

Yeah, can't trust the system. No tin foil hats but I've dealt with federal government contracting enough to know that 95% of them are inept. No reason to believe other branches of government are different.
