Dropping the tank isn't all that bad as long as it's less than half a tank of gas. You'll want an extra set of hands to help lower it down.

One of the bolts on the strap is tough to access. I used a stubby wrench but it took me like an hour to get it out. That was the hardest part but it could have been avoided.

None of the write-ups mention it but get a SWIVEL SOCKET for the bolt I think it is 13mm if I remember correctly. Not a swivel attached to a socket but an actual "swivel socket"... I didn't have a set but I would have bought one had I known. Regardless, I had the tank out and back in after maybe 5 hours total over the weekend.

Sounds like you might have a fuel pump issue so dropping the tank may very well be in your future...
Thank you for the tips! I’ll definitely pick one of those up. Thankfully, I’m sitting just over a quarter tank. I guess while I’m at it, it’ll probably be a good idea to replace the filter and fuel lines as well.

Yeah definitely do the filter too, I didn't want to mess with the lines going from the pump to the hat so I just ordered the whole fuel pump & hat assembly. I'm mostly stock so I got a 320 lph pump assembly... it's an upgrade in flow but it works with stock components.

Also you'll want to replace your fuel filler neck grommet. They degrade quickly and I bet yours is rotted like every single Mustang I've owned. I don't know why they aren't made differently. It is a rubber grommet that seals your tank where the fuel filler tube goes in. I've done it both ways and it's so much easier with the tank out but it can be done with it installed.

Yeah that’s a good point. Might as well do it with the tank lowered. Any pumps that you would recommend? I’ve heard the svt focus pump works with these.

Mine is a BBK-branded fuel pump assembly which consists of a Walbro pump in a stock-looking hat. There appears to be some difference between the 1999 (my year cobra) and the 2001 assemblies. Here is the link to the one that would work in your car. When I bought it the pump was rated at 320 lph.

BBK Mustang Direct Replacement Fuel Pump 1863 (01-04 All, Excluding 03-04 Cobra)

It is NOT the most economical option but like I said I didn't want to mess with the lines going to the hat and I also wanted to delete my PPRV valve (very much debated topic but my car runs much smoother now?).

The SVT focus pump is what a lot of people here go with and it seems to work just fine. It should be more economical than BBK which tends to be pricey for everything they sell.

It's been over 2 years and maybe 6000 miles and my car runs great, noticeably better than when I had my old stock pump in it.

Much appreciated! I just ran the fuel pressure test, and it failed miserably. It took 7 key on cycles just for the pressure to get to 10 psi, and when started, the pressure dropped right to 0 psi.

A lot of keying in here about the injectors, fuel pressure and tune, but with blue smoke and compression ratios that are too far apart (for a new engine) there may be bigger issues to tackle.

Pull the engine and teardown. Rebuild it properly. Jackass you bought it from probably slapped it together and the heads are likely stock with old leaky seals. Sucks... but if the parts are what you say they are rebuilding it SHOULD be as simple as having the heads done, leaving the bottom alone and getting a competent tuner on there.
