Wow, I'm actually rather surprised the majority is saying no.

Well first you have the Americans stereotype of scared to leave the US. The small exception is all inclusives where you don't see locals, there's no culture, others can't get in, and everyone speaks English. It lets them leave the country, see a nice beach, but also stay in a safety bubble. Now you have like 10 dead and countless cases of folks who felt fine and then had extreme flu symptoms. This has popped the bubble. Que up the "See, this is why I don't leave the US, we got everything I need right here" posts.

I find their sand is the best. lol
I like the place 3 years ago so we decided to go back.
The Money isn't a real issue. The pain in the ass of rebooking multiple couples to another resort elsewhere in 3 weeks is the issue.
We get a full room refund and the airline charges $150 each to change the flight. We just have to find a place that the airline services and that has places available last minute.

Personally I think they should be bending over backwards now to make sure nothing else goes wrong.

Fair enough. I guess your reasons only need to make sense to you lol.

Plenty other places are cheaper.

I'm just going on what I was told. If you mean Mexico, I would first write that off as too scary for a lot of Americans. Cuba too. Americans want safety, someplace there's neighbor's cousin went for a honeymoon and said it was amazing....but also cheap.

What areas/islands would be cheaper?

I saw a travel blogger in the ABC islands and it was expensive as **** and looked like the bad parts of Mexico.

But, if I try to drive 7 miles to Dunkin Donuts, I will count at least 4 near head-on collisions with distracted drivers.

You guys do drive cars... on the road... right?

It's like when the DC sniper situation was going on. 17 people were killed over a 7 month span. That same span claimed the lives of 18,700 on roadways in the US. Everyone avoided DC but still drove around like there's no risk. That's like not going outside because you might get struck by lightning, but playing Russian Roulette now and then.

Which headline gets your attention:
32,000 die each year in motor vehicle accidents
or
15 die in rabid shark-midget hybrid experiment gone wrong, says blind quadriplegic scientist

Don't let the news dictate your life- statistical anomalies make headlines and cause stirs.
Aren't you the guy that didn't drive his nice car cuz you almost get killed weekly and can't sleep cuz yer worried about tomorrow and the next day and the next...?

That's the thing, The Media is making a lot of the accusations of causes. The more they do the more familes come out of the woodwork claiming they had issues.
The FBI has been there a week and still no official word confirming?

Here is a good article that looks somewhat at both ends.

Dominican Republic tourist deaths: 7 questions, answered | Boston.com

Panama is growing in popularity and is cheaper. Punta Cana is very comparative to Jamaica, the Bahamas and Costa Rica.

Only the ABC islands as you said are really higher and then depending on resort even that isn't much different. The main difference most likely being further to fly so the plane tickets cost are higher.

Saw a attempted interview with their president and then some spokesman claiming people were just overeating and having heart attacks. No thanks.

Hard to say really. Since youve already paid and all. If i hadnt paid, I'd probably skip the DR. I dont think their accidental. Could be wrong. Could be a group of people targeting Americans at random.

I actually think they are accidental. Well, not intentional, but not exactly accidental. I recall that people were being warned about tainted alcohol about a year ago, so I used the trusty Google and found that tainted alcohol has been a real issue recently (last couple of years), especially in Mexico:

Terrifying stories from tourists in Mexico continue a year after mysterious drowning

Travel agents and popular sites didn’t share the risks with those booking travel to Mexico resorts

Reports of tainted alcohol in Mexico spark call for action

Sure am. Statistics don't lie. I have no problem swimming in the ocean, flying on planes, eating sushi, own firearms, and other things that are supposedly "OMFG dangerous" according to the media. The road though? I avoid it as much as I can, having lost family members and friends (and nearly a wife and two other family members) due to the epidemic that is high-speed human stupidity. Why it is just an accepted fact is beyond me.

135 "assault rifle" deaths per year gets multiple national campaigns and is a divide in the nation.
9 deaths in the DR and people are cancelling vacations.
16 shark attacks per year, and people say they won't swim in the ocean.
32,000 deaths on the road per year, and I'm the odd one for not driving a car worth more than the state-min insured cell-addicted inbred crossing the line to hit it...

Not while I'm in my house, but close. My wife says I'm more like a cross between Monk and Dilbert.
