Another vote for J2fab. Have one of 200a units with the wire upgrade on mine for the past 3 years. Works fantastic.

Went thru a similar problem on both my 03 Cobra and my terminator swapped 03 Mach 1.
I have the Nations alternator on my 03 Cobra and it is fantastic.
I have the PA performance on my 03 Mach1 as it was available during Mustang week 2018 when my factory rebuilt one died that week. It works, but does not charge as well at idle like my Nations one in my Cobra.
Plan to swap out the PA unit for the Nations later this year.

How many miles on all of these alternators? The amount of time on the car doesn't really mean much because if the car is rarely driven, the alternator isn't seeing much use.

I bought my car from the 3rd owner - I have no idea if the alt that failed in it was the original one - it was a Ford piece and the car had around 66K miles on it when it finally gave up the ghost (but it had been warning with a battery light for a while).

The total miles are 21k, that's a bad alternator every 5k about!!

I have roughly 12k miles on my Nation's. It works just as good as day one. The external regulator is a nice feature. Mine is mounted up by the front bumper away from most of the heat.

When my alternator failed I found it was a Ford reman, meaning who knows what number alternator it was. Even pulling a factory alternator off doesn’t mean it’s the original with the track record on these.

This is a very good point. Folks who recommend alternators that "are working great" should also mention how many miles they have on them so far.

I always recommend stock, as long as the lower pulley is stock.

When I have to pull mine off, I'll know exactly how many miles it lasted because I'm the original owner. So far, it has 126k.

Same area I have mine mounted. Did you do the wire upgrade?

I’m curious as to why a ground from the alternator to the negative battery post helps out with a higher amperage alternator?

Electricity flows in circuit. It flows out through the positive post and back through ground so it is beneficial to have equal size positive and negative cables attached to the alternator.

Whats everybody using these days?

The oem lasted me 2 years after my built motor was done back in 2007. I then got the PA Performance 130 Amp Alternator from lethal, it lasted 4 years. I then got an autozone one and it lasted 2 years and my last one was a rebuilt oem. its about 3 years old. She started running bad last night, shaking at idle, put max load on it and volts were at 11.43 time for a new one. I checked and n warranty's them because they all know there going to brake, I guess.

The total miles are 21k, that's a bad alternator every 5k about!!

Any better options out there that will last?

And yes I am running the 4 pound lower with the different alternator pulley to not make it spin to fast.

3 Years 10K miles, still getting the same voltage as new on a cheaper V6 alternator.

The heat from your exhaust manifold is what kills the alternator. If you don't insulate it or cool it you will eventually destroy it regardless of who made it.

Has anyone seen a documented Nations alternator that has failed?

Pretty much everyone people have mentioned in this thread I have heard of a failure.

Actually i have not. Not saying its never happened but they seem to last. Just follow the instructions and make sure to do the wire upgrade.
